Are You Treating Your Hair Right?

6 shampoos to give your hair the TLC it deserves!

By Saurav Bhanot | LAST UPDATED: NOV 19, 2025

Hair today, gone tomorrow?

Apologies for starting out with that unfortunate pun but a story on haircare products was pretty much asking for it, right? Anyway, back to regular programming. It’s quite a bizarre fact to acknowledge but even in 2025, we’re having to explain the importance of using quality shampoos and conditioners to people. The ‘we’ I’m referring to is myself and the ‘people’ is obviously you, dear reader, who needs to understand that you can’t have an extraordinary mop of hair without using products that’ll make it look (and feel) exactly that.

Long story short: you’ll never have good hair if you’re not taking care of it.

Just like your face, you need to have a haircare routine too. You do have a skincare routine, right? You better have. I haven’t been slaving myself, writing one wonderful skincare story after another for you to still go about your lives without taking care of your skin. BRB, calming myself down Yes, where were we? Your haircare routine, which you need to start developing, if you haven’t already.

How to build your haircare routine?

As a wise person once said, start with the basics.

Which shampoo are you currently using? Is it compatible with your hair type? Is it cleansing your hair and scalp effectively? These are a few good questions you should answer, and if the response is in the affirmative, stick with your current shampoo. If not, go get one that does all the aforementioned things.

Next up is a hair conditioner. This is the ‘treatment’ part of your haircare routine. You need it to, well, condition your hair so that it can fight free hair damage effectively. A good conditioner will strengthen your hair and prevent breakage as well as make its appearance better. A conditioner isn’t supposed to be used every day, but it’s best used every few days after you’ve washed your hair with a good shampoo.

There are a couple of other steps you could add in your haircare routine. Oiling your hair once a week or twice a month is greatly beneficial, so is getting a hair spa once every few weeks. But these are additional steps and will only work if you’re doing the first two religiously.

What kind of shampoo should you buy?

A good shampoo is one that cleans your hair follicles and scalp, fight excess oil production (for those with oily hair) and helps promote healthy hair, thereby reducing hair loss.

When buying a shampoo, ideally, look for a sulphate-free option. These shampoos help maintain the natural pH balance in your hair and reduce the risk of dryness, itchiness and /or inflammation on your scalp.

How to choose a hair conditioner?

A good hair conditioner works at adding nutrients to the hair shaft and cuticles. When you’re looking to purchase a hair conditioner, opt for one that is compatible with your hair type, just like your shampoo. People with oily hair and scalp, need a lighter conditioner that does the work without adding excess oils. Those with dry hair can opt for a heavier one instead.

Another key tip is to check the pH levels of the conditioner – anything between 4.5 and 5.5 is ideal since that is hair’s natural level too.

There are also a few other kinds of conditioners: voluminising/thickening conditioners packed with all the good stuff including biotin and collagen among other things for those with thinning hair, leave-in conditioners ideal for dealing with strays, fizz and detangling and deep conditioning ones meant for an added dose of moisture. Take your pick basis your own specific hair concerns.
