Before a man walks into any room, his choice of fragrance makes a statement. The scent he carries goes a long way. If you can tell a lot about him by the shoes he wears, how he smells is an even bigger, and better way to get to know him. Is he a man of musk? Does he keep it classic? Does his scent remind you of breezy summer days or balmy evenings galore? So much to guess, imagine, feel, and reminisce. Is there anything more evocative than a fragrance? Only the man who’s wearing it, I suppose. Say, Shahid Kapoor. Quite like his movies, even his choice of fragrance must be just as unique, or uniquely him. It’s probably why he’s now associated with Bvlgari as their first friend of the house for fragrances.

We sat down with Shahid Kapoor to talk about it all, from his taste in scents and daily grooming essentials to how his take on self-care has evolved over the years, and more.

How special is it for you to become Bvlgari’s first friend of the house for fragrances?

It's definitely special. Fragrance is something I've always enjoyed and connected with on a personal level. It's one of those things that's subtle, but it can have a real impact on how you feel and carry yourself through the day. What I like about Bvlgari’s fragrances is that they feel distinctive without being overpowering. They have a personality of their own. It feels like a partnership that makes sense to me, and I'm excited to begin this journey with the Maison.

What do you love the most about Bvlgari Man and Bvlgari Le Gemme and when & how would you recommend wearing them?

They're actually quite different, which is what I like about them. Bvlgari Man collection is probably what I reach for most often. It's easy, versatile and works for almost anything. Bvlgari Man Wood Essence EDP is one I particularly enjoy because it feels fresh without trying too hard. The Bvlgari Le Gemme collection feels a little more elevated for me. Those fragrances have a stronger personality and I usually find myself wearing them in the evening or when I'm dressing up for something. Having said that, I don't really follow rules with fragrance. Most days I just wear whatever I'm in the mood for.

What role do you think fragrance plays when it comes to completing one's final look before stepping out?

Honestly, it's usually the last thing I put on before I step out, and it adds the final, finishing touch to my look. Think of it like a spritz of self-confidence before you leave your house. I don't think of fragrance as something that completes a look as much as it completes how you feel. Some days you want something fresh and light, other days something with a little more depth. It's a small detail, but it just makes you feel ready.

What was the first fragrance you ever bought for yourself, or remember using?

The first fragrances I remember were probably the ones I borrowed from my father's collection. I think that's where a lot of our earliest memories of fragrance come from. Before you understand notes or ingredients, you associate a scent with a person. The first fragrance I bought for myself came much later. I've always been drawn to fragrances that feel effortless and understated rather than anything too overpowering. Over time, I've realised that the fragrances you keep coming back to are usually the ones that feel most like you.

Are you someone who wears a signature scent, or do you prefer different fragrances for different moods and occasions?

These days, I definitely like having options. There was a time when I wore the same fragrance for years, but now I enjoy switching depending on where I'm headed or how I'm feeling. For everyday wear, I tend to lean towards something fresh and easy. For evenings or special occasions, I might choose something with a little more depth. Some days you feel like wearing one thing, some days another. I think fragrance is a bit like that.

What's a common mistake most men make when it comes to choosing and/or using a fragrance?

Probably trying too hard. People often choose a fragrance because they like it on someone else, or they assume stronger automatically means better. Fragrance is incredibly personal. The best scent is usually the one that feels natural on you. I'd always recommend spending some time with a fragrance before deciding. The best fragrance is usually the one that feels like you.

What are the non-negotiables in your daily grooming regime?

I try not to overcomplicate things. Staying active, eating well, looking after my skin, and getting enough rest whenever I can are probably the basics I come back to. Nothing fancy. Just trying to stay consistent.

Is there a grooming lesson you've learned over the years that you now stick to?

Simple habits are usually the ones that last.  There's always a new trend or product around the corner, but I've found that consistency is what really makes a difference. Whether it's fitness, skincare, or grooming in general, it's the things you do regularly that have the biggest impact over time.

For a man on the go, quite like yourself, what would be a few quick grooming steps you'd recommend?

A good haircut, basic skincare and a fragrance you enjoy wearing can do most of the work. You don't need twenty different products. The simpler the routine, the easier it is to stick to.

Lastly, how has your relationship with grooming changed now compared to when you started out in the movies?

When I started out, grooming felt more like a professional requirement because of the work we do. Over the years, my perspective has changed. Today, I see it more as part of taking care of myself overall. It's less about appearance and more about feeling healthy, feeling confident, and being comfortable in your own skin. I've also become a lot more relaxed about it. I know what works for me now, so I tend to keep things fairly simple.
