I may not be much of a Formula One fanatic but I’m certainly not living under a rock to not know how Carlos Sainz ‘drives’ (pun absolutely intended) everyone crazy, everywhere in the world. Almost everyone at the Esquire India HQ, for instance, had all kinds of questions (at least the ones I can reveal) for me, post my conversation with him. Like it is the case on social media, where this, to borrow from Sade, Smooth Operator, routinely goes viral for, well, just going about his life, when he isn’t racing on a track, that is.
A beautiful man with an enviable head of hair who’s also a successful sports personality might not be much of an anomaly anymore, but you’ve got to give it to Sainz for eliciting reactions few other male superstars can manage across the globe. Is it because he also happens to that particular brand of charming that’s never cocky but always charismatic? I definitely came out impressed, so one can only imagine what’s it like for fans who’re already floored by his racing prowess.
It’s also why, probably, L’Oreal Paris signed him as one of the brand’s faces; if there’s another man more suited to talk about great skin and hair, he better come out and stake claim but for now, the crown fervently rests on Sainz’s head.
During his sojourn at the Cannes Film Festival with the brand, Sainz spoke to me about his skin & hair routine, yes, but also his advice for other men in a constantly evolving word. Edited excerpts:
What’s been your personal relationship with skincare and grooming, and how has it evolved over the years, particularly as someone constantly in the public eye?
Yes, it has definitely evolved a lot over the last few years. I began travelling extensively when I was 19 or 20 years old, during my first year in Formula One. At that time, I would travel with just the basics, one shampoo, my toothpaste, and essentials like that. The only thing I really paid attention to was perhaps my shampoo.
As you grow older and gain more experience, you begin to notice the toll that constant travel, jet lag, and a busy schedule can take on you. Over the last few years, I have realised how valuable it is to invest a little time in grooming and skincare, and in taking extra care of yourself. Nothing too complicated, just simple routines. I am always on the go, so I like to keep it quick and efficient. Spending two or three minutes every morning really helps set me up for a good day.
Your hair has always been the talk of town. What’s the secret to keeping your mane looking good?
I think genetics probably play a part, I’m not going to lie. When I was 19, people began talking about my hair a lot, especially on social media. At the time, I did not even realise it was considered particularly good hair. I think people in Spain generally tend to have good hair, so genetics definitely help.
That said, I was already travelling everywhere with my shampoo, so I suppose I was taking a bit of extra care from the start. Lately, because I spend so much time wearing caps and helmets for racing, cycling, and playing padel, I use the L’Oréal Elvive Growth Booster Shampoo. It helps keep my hair healthy and well-maintained despite the travel, and I feel it stays in better condition throughout the year.
Do you want to tell us a few skincare essentials we’ll always find in your travel kit?
I would say there are three essentials for me. First, I use the L’Oréal Men Expert Hydra Energetic is my go-to moisturiser and helps me feel fresh and ready before stepping into the public eye. Second, I use the L’Oréal Paris Men Expert Barber Club Daily Beard Oil. It is incredibly efficient because it works as a three-in-one product. Since I am always rushing from one place to another, having one product that can help with beard, skin, and hair care is very convenient. Finally, whenever I know I will be exposed to the sun, whether I am playing golf, cycling in hot weather, or spending time outdoors, I apply the L’Oréal Paris Men Expert Daily Invisible Fluid SPF50. With those three products, I feel prepared for almost any situation.
Men & skincare is a fairly recent match but one that’s fast evolving across the world. What would be your tips for men who are just about starting their self-care journeys?
My advice would be to keep it simple. I think men often prefer straightforward and efficient routines, and there is nothing wrong with that. We usually like things that are practical and quick. I would recommend starting with simple products, perhaps something multi-purpose like a two-in-one or three-in-one product, just as I use. That is a great way to begin. Then, if you want to explore more specialised grooming and skincare later, you can always do that. But to start, keep it simple and effective.
Have men become a lot more open when it comes to skincare & talking about it?
I think the most important thing is to approach it naturally. I have many friends now who are taking much better care of themselves, whether it is their hair or their skin. Sometimes I notice the difference and ask them what they are doing differently, and then they tell me. The key is to be open about these conversations and to speak without hesitation or embarrassment. It should feel completely normal for men to care for themselves and invest more time in grooming and self-care. I see that change happening more and more, not only with my friends, but even with my father.
Talk to us about the Cannes Film Festival - what does being there mean to you?
It is actually my second time here. I had an amazing experience last year and enjoyed it so much that I had to come back. It is exciting not only because of the red carpet, but also the people you meet. Last year, I had the chance to meet Eva Longoria, someone I had seen on television for years. It is special to spend time with people you have admired for so long, and then also have your own moment on the red carpet.
