The Indian passport has been through quite a bit in 2026. First it had to deal with the fact that it wasn't really a document that proved citizenship for Indians and was only ever a travel id that can be granted to Indian citizen wanting to travel overseas.

If that wasn't enough to shake its grounds, the Henley Passport Index 2026 has made it feel like a lift stuck between floors. India's passport jumped spots between 85th to 75th this year and finally holds 84th position alongside Algeria and Mauritania.

In February, the much hopeful headlines stated that India's passport had leapt ten places from 85th to 75th on the Henley Passport Index. It meant we'd soon get more visa-free access to the world's many countries which had Indian passport holder go through plenty of paper work.

Alas, July came and India was back on the 80's list and now in October it has furthered slipped down to 84th position on the chart. If humour be damned, the official framing of the latest edition states India to have climbed...by one spot.

Given it is only one step higher on the ladder, how much free access do we get as enthusiastic travellers? The number is here for your preview.

What The Henley Passport Index Actually Counts

The index ranks 199 passports across 227 destinations, using data from the International Air Transport Association, and it counts how many of those destinations you can reach without securing a visa beforehand. Crucially, that tally includes visa-on-arrival and electronic travel authorisations alongside genuine, walk-straight-through visa-free entry.

This is a generous definition of "without a visa". Visa-on-arrival is still a queue and a form. An e-visa is still a visa; it just arrives by email. The index is useful, but it is not a measure of how freely you can move. It is a measure of how few consulates you must visit before you can.

And the rank, unlike the count, is a relative sport. India can stand still and fall, because someone else signed a treaty. India can lose access to two destinations and rise, because other countries lost more. Henley's own ladder rewards the passports that move fastest, not the ones that arrive first. A rank is a mood ring. It is informative, certainly but not something one must plan a holiday around.

So, Who Gets The Icing On The Cake?

Singapore remains the world's strongest passport, now with 193 destinations. Its citizens can cross most of the planet on the strength of a document the size of a pack of cigarettes. Japan and South Korea trail close behind. The United States, which spent the better part of a generation assuming that its passport was a birthright to the world, has re-entered the top ten while recording some of its steepest annual losses. The UK has had a similar year.
