The First Trailer Of A24’s Mother Mary Is Here

Imagine if Black Swan and Phantom Thread had a baby. But you know that this is an A24 movie, so of course it will turn both the films on their heads and become a completely different thing altogether.

What’s The Story?

Anne Hathaway steps into the sequinned, razor-edged world of superstardom as Mother Mary, a Beyoncé-esque pop deity whose image is immaculate but whose personal life is a slowly cracking mirror. On the eve of a high-stakes comeback performance, she finds herself reunited with Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel), her once-trusted best friend and former costume designer.

The two begrudgingly agree to collaborate on her upcoming tour, but this truce seems to be as stable as a candle in a hurricane. Working together reopens old wounds (and creates new ones, literally), power dynamics shift, madness follows, and… some sort of spirit seems to possess Anne Hathaway’s character?

The trailer says that this is not a ghost story, so there is no ghost in the A Nightmare on Elm Street sense, nor is it a romance, but the tension between the two teeters on a borderline sexual one. What we do know is this is a David Lowery movie, and Lowery isn’t exactly a lightweight - he can deliver haunting, reverential artsy films (The Green Knight, A Ghost Story) and also pivot without warning into glossy Disney territory with films like Pete’s Dragon and Pan & Wendy. So expect to be seated throughout the runtime, occasionally trying to make sense of what you just watched while you are awed by the cinematography.

Who Are In It?

Anne Hathaway is well on her way to a generational comeback in cinema (seriously, why was everyone hating on her a couple of years back?). From the released stills from Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey to the recent The Devil Wears Prada Sequel trailer release, 2026 is poised to be her year.

Also in the lead is Michaela Coel of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever fame, essaying the role of the embittered designer out to create the perfect hate dress for her friend-turned-foe. Model and actress Hunter Schafer is rumoured to play her assistant, while Kaia Gerber, Alba Baptista, FKA Twigs, and Sian Clifford appear in supporting roles.

Daniel Hart scored the movie, while FKA Twigs will be making a soundtrack for the film, along with Bleachers frontman Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX, who made her debut in film soundtracks with the haunting track Everything Is Romantic from Emerald Fennell’s upcoming movie Wuthering Heights.

Mother Mary was filmed in Germany, backed by support from the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and the DFFF. The project is produced by Lowery, Toby Halbrooks, and James M. Johnston, with Jeanie Igoe of Homebird Productions joining forces with Jonas Katzenstein, Maximilian Leo, and Jonathan Saubach from Cologne-based Augenschein Filmproduktion.

Mother Mary is slated for an April 2024 release, and final dates are yet to be announced.
