Everything You Need To Know About 'Materialists'

The film starring Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans releases on June 13

Let me start by saying that I’ll watch anything starring Dakota Johnson. Literally, anything.

She’s among my favourite young female actors – she's experimental in her film choices, dares to produce indie, off-beat scripts and also runs a book club on Instagram that any book lover would die for. Her performances more often than not hit the right notes and in his age of overt social media exposure, she leads a relatively quiet life far removed from the arclights. What’s not to love about her!

The fact that she’s being directed by Celine Song in her next film, Materialists, makes me that much more excited. And if you’ve watched (and loved!) Songs’ previous film, her debut directorial venture, Past Lives, starring the incredible Greta Lee, you would be too.

Going by the new trailer that just dropped, Materialists is essentially about a professional matchmaker, Johnson, who can’t sort out her own personal life. She’s caught between two men, Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans, and can’t decide who she’d rather be with. If this sounds like a dream scenario for millions of women (and men) out there, it probably is, as the film takes the viewers back to the golden era of romantic comedies that have somehow disappeared from the scene.

Pascal stars as a unicorn billionaire who’s trying to woo Johnson. He’s the perfect match for her on paper, which, looking at the man, makes absolute sense. He’s the internet newest, most loved boyfriend after all!

Then there’s Evans who’s having quite a time at the movies off late – you saw him in the trailer of Honey Don’t!, right?

In Materialists, the actor stars as a cater-waiter who is also Johnson’s ex, a man she isn’t fully over. That he isn’t rich might have a major grouse with her but she holds a candle for him. Again, who wouldn’t?

The film puts Johnson’s character in that classic flummox: to choose someone who can give her the future she desires or go back to someone for a past she isn’t over yet. We’ve all been there, haven’t we?

Song’s ability to touch upon tender human emotions with cannibalising on them is what made Past Lives stand out, and that’s exactly what I’m hoping she’ll do with Materialists.

What seems like a typical romantic love triangle on the surface – which isn’t a bad thing at all, btw – might just reveal more about relationships and how we manoeuvre them as the film progresses. I wouldn’t put it past Song to present a film both genre-defying and upending every possible trope we’ve come to associate with such movies. She did that beautifully with Past Lives too, after all. Plus the trio in the cast aren’t just easy on the eyes but capable performers too, so you know she’s got the actors to execute her intentions with great effect.
