Every few years, Apple changes the shape of what a flagship can be. This year it has done so by offering two and one of them is a foldable. It was a first for Apple. The iPhone Duo folds open to a tablet-sized canvas, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max refines the large-screen formula it has built over several generations. This iPhone Duo vs iPhone 18 Pro Max breakdown follows how they differ in price, display, design and cameras, and what that means for the person carrying one. While you can do most everything on the iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone Duo has limitations.
The iPhone Duo price starts at Rs 2,99,900 for the 256GB model, and goes up to Rs 3,24,900 for 512GB, Rs 3,74,900 for 1TB and Rs 4,49,900 for 2TB. The iPhone 18 Pro Max begins at Rs 1,79,900 and climbs to Rs 2,04,900, Rs 2,54,900 and Rs 3,29,900 across the same storage options. Line the two up tier by tier and the Duo costs Rs 1,20,000 more every time. The Pro Max is hardly cheap either, as it is priced Rs 30,000 above what the iPhone 17 Pro Max cost at launch. The iPhone 18 Pro Max has been on sale in India since September 18, and the iPhone Duo went on sale yesterday, October 23.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max holds on to its 6.9-inch display, now with LTPO+ technology. It is still a single, rigid slab with an aluminium unibody, Face ID and the Action button, and it is offered in burgundy, glacier, silver and black.
The iPhone Duo works very differently. Open it and you get a 7.6-inch inner display, with Split View. Notably, you can even run two apps side by side. Close it and a 5.4-inch outer screen takes over, one that can stand on its own for calls and video. Apple has swapped Face ID for Touch ID and dropped the Action button. Folded shut, the Duo is wider and heavier than the Pro Max, so the smaller outer screen shouldn't be mistaken for a smaller phone. It is available in Star White and Night Sky.
iPhone Duo camera just cannot match the capabilities of the iPhone 18 Pro Max. The Pro Max has a 48MP Fusion telephoto camera with true optical zoom and a LiDAR scanner, and it supports ProRAW, ProRes and Apple Log 2. In effect, you can do professional grade photography with it. Video quality too is good enough to make professional films. None of these come to the Duo, whose cameras are designed around the foldable body rather than for photographic reach.
Between the iPhone Duo and the iPhone 18 Pro Max, who gets the better deal? For people who would use the Duo's unfolded display every day for multitasking, the premium is easier to justify. For those who care more about the camera, especially zoom and manual controls, or who would rather keep the spend down and still end up with a phone that can take exceptional images and video, the iPhone 18 Pro Max does more for the money.
