The Mercedes-Benz E-Class: First Among Cars And A Benchmark In Luxury
For Esquire India’s Auto Issue, we look at what defines aspiration on Indian roads today
COCOONED IN THE COMFORT OF THE BACK SEAT of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, wafting smoothly towards the airport, I find myself enveloped by the warm glow of the ambient lighting, immersed in the sheer indulgence that surrounds me. It’s in moments like these—quiet, uninterrupted—that one truly absorbs the brilliance of this machine.
As I glance around, soaking in the finely appointed cabin, I’m struck once again by just how awe-inspiring it is to sit in the back seat of an E-Class. It’s a sensation that never fades, no matter how many times I’ve experienced it. In India, owning a car bearing the iconic three-pointed star has long been seen as a symbol of success, prestige and aspiration.
Among all the models in the Mercedes-Benz lineup, the E-Class holds a special place in this narrative. It’s not just a car—it’s a milestone. Over the last 30 years, more than 60,000 units of the E-Class have found homes across the country. While that number might not sound massive in broader automotive terms, it is quite extraordinary for a luxury model in a market that’s only recently embraced premium mobility at scale.
The E-Class has consistently been Mercedes-Benz India’s best-seller and its success only surged further when the long wheelbase (LWB) variant was introduced in 2017—a configuration developed specifically for markets like India and China, where back-seat comfort reigns supreme. With this, the E-Class redefined luxury travel for the chauffeur-driven elite and widened its appeal to entrepreneurs and families alike. Now, in its latest avatar unveiled in October 2024, the E-Class raises the bar yet again.
The newest generation is larger, smarter and more luxurious than ever. The highlight variant, the E 450 4MATIC, combines power and panache. Its 3.0-litre inline-six turbocharged petrol engine with mild-hybrid tech delivers a punchy 381 hp and 500 Nm of torque, ensuring that those who enjoy being behind the wheel aren’t left wanting.
It whips you to 100 in just 4.5 seconds. Paired with Mercedes’ 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission and 4MATIC all-wheel drive, it offers a buttery smooth, refined but punchy drive. But of course, the back seat is where the E-Class LWB truly dazzles. The rear cabin is nothing short of a sanctuary. In the new generation, the seats recline up to 36 degrees, include extendable thigh support and come with “boss mode,” allowing the rear passenger to push the front seat forward with the touch of a button, fully stretching out in ultimate relaxation.
Despite the rise of SUVs, the E-Class continues to embody timeless elegance. Its stately design, complete with a chrome-heavy grille, sleek LED DRLs and a flowing silhouette, commands attention wherever it goes. Arriving in an E-Class still elicits a head-turn, a held-open door and an almost ceremonial welcome from onlookers who’ve long dreamt of being in your seat.
As I lean back, fully reclined and insulated from the chaos outside, I’m reminded again why this car has endured. Few vehicles can blend tradition, innovation, and indulgence so effortlessly. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class isn’t just transportation. It’s an experience, a status symbol, and for many, a coveted car.
