Omega and Time Avenue Honour India’s Golf Trailblazer Smriti Mehra

Celebrating a legend who changed the game for Indian women’s golf

Time Avenue, Mumbai’s luxury watch retailer, in partnership with Omega, recently hosted a soirée honouring Smriti “Simi” Mehra, a pioneer in Indian golf.

As the first Indian woman to compete on the LPGA tour, Simi is a relentless force on the field and her career is a testament to perseverance required to carve out a path for oneself. Her story begins in an era when golf in India was still an exclusive, male-dominated sport. Undeterred, Mehra became the first Indian woman to qualify for the LPGA Tour, a milestone that paved the way for countless young women to take up the game. She followed that historic breakthrough with victories across international tours, a top-five finish at the British Open in 1998, and the honour of representing India at the 2008 World Cup in South Africa.

“It is an honour to welcome Smriti Mehra to Time Avenue,” Time Avenue Director Viraal Rajan said at the gathering. “We celebrate not just Omega’s heritage in timekeeping but also her incredible journey. Time is a luxury, and every second counts in celebrating the art of perfect timing.”

“Omega was the first brand we launched at Time Avenue,” Rajan added. “The brand represents heritage and timelessness. It has always been close to my heart and always will be.”

That same ethos of enduring excellence defined Mehra’s journey. A trailblazer in Indian golf, she broke barriers not just for herself but for the generations of women who would follow. As a co-founder of the Women’s Golf Association of India (WGAI), she has played an instrumental role in developing the country’s professional circuit, mentoring young players, and pushing for better opportunities for female golfers.

When asked about facing the intimidating prospect of being a pioneer in her field, Mehra said that it was scary. "But I stood my ground. I'm honestly relentless... Once I made up my mind, there was no backing down. I trust my gut because my gut tells me everything, and then I just go with the flow."

While Mehra’s passion for golf remains undiminished, her love for precision extends beyond. Watches, she believes, are a perfect reflection of the sport she has dedicated her life to. “Golf and watches go hand in hand—it’s all about precision, being on time, and heritage,” she says. Her personal favourite is a classic Omega timepiece gifted by her wife, though she admits to having a soft spot for the latest Aqua Terra Seamaster.
