A Toiletry Bag Is the Most Underrated Accessory You Pack

Small, overlooked, and used more than anything else in your suitcase

With travel months on the horizon, what you pack tends to get all the attention. How you pack it rarely does, particularly when it comes to grooming. You notice it when things slip out of place: at the airport security line, in cramped hotel bathrooms, and in the subtle disarray of unpacking once you’re home.

Anyone who remembers the morning routine from American Psycho will know how obsessive Patrick Bateman is about grooming. Every product has its place, every step is deliberate, and every tool is exactly where it should be. While most of us aren’t following a ten-step routine before breakfast, the principle holds: order changes how everything else works.

In practice, that control comes down to smaller decisions. One of them is the toiletry pouch. It’s rarely glamorous and barely talked about, but it carries the items you rely on most during a trip.

Toiletry Bag - The Most Used Piece In Your Suitcase

Most men pack light, so what earns space has to justify it. Mohit Jain, founder and CEO of Miraggio, says, “Most people treat a toiletry bag as an afterthought. It isn’t seen as a hero item in the way luggage or a weekender is, yet it’s one of the few things you reach for multiple times a day while travelling. When it works, you barely notice it. When it doesn’t, it disrupts your routine.” Shruti Mangla, co-founder and creative director of Perona, makes a similar point. A toiletry bag often lives inside your luggage. But it’s also one of the most personal things you carry, moving from hotel counters to security trays to gym lockers. When it’s well-made, it holds its own alongside the rest of your kit.

Design Matters More Than You Think

It’s easy to underestimate the extent to which design influences our daily use. With a toiletry pouch, the difference is immediate. Jain puts it simply: “Intent in design separates a good toiletry bag from one that just takes up space. A well-designed bag balances compactness with capacity, keeps essentials visible, and eliminates the need to rummage through clutter.” Mangla approaches it through structure. She believes that a poorly designed toiletry bag collapses, hides what you need, and wastes space because it can’t hold its shape. A well-made one maintains structure without adding bulk and fits easily into a cabin suitcase.

The Details That Count

Choosing the right toiletry bag comes down to how it performs over time. Jain’s approach is direct. Functionality should come first: smart compartmentalisation, spill-resistant interiors, durable materials, and a structure that stays intact without adding bulk. Mangla breaks that down further. “First, proportion. It should be large enough for essentials but not oversized. Overpacking usually starts with excess space. Second, structure. A sturdy base and a smooth-opening zipper make daily use easier. And then, there are the planned compartments. Internal pockets separate grooming tools, bottles and smaller items, preventing clutter.”

Made For The Long Haul

A good toiletry pouch tends to outlast most of what it travels with, so the details matter. Mangla explains, “Material affects durability and perception. Full-grain or textured leather ages well and resists daily wear, while technical fabric options offer lightweight practicality for frequent flyers. Reinforced sides and a defined base protect what’s inside and improve performance.” Organisation is what makes it work. Give each item a place, and packing becomes intentional. It reduces mess and prevents leaks from affecting the rest of your luggage.

What Most Men Get Wrong

Most missteps come down to prioritising aesthetics over use. “The biggest mistake is prioritising looks over practicality,” explains Jain. “People often choose bags that are either too bulky or too flimsy, with little thought given to internal layout or material quality.” In the end, a good toiletry pouch won’t transform your trip in dramatic ways. It removes small frustrations you didn’t realise were there. That’s the point.
