The Muscle Tee Is Back!

From Demna's recent Gucci show in Milan to Bollywood hunks' thirst traps have inundated our IG feeds

Call it a muscle shirt or compression tee - the muscle-baring sleeveless top is everywhere.

The recent Gucci Primavera show by Demna at Milan Fashion Week brought back the spotlight on the muscle tee showcasing it in an ultra-bodycon polished style. The showcase sent out several iterations of the muscle tee in monochromes styled with evening dress trousers and glossy jeans. Versace too made a strong case for Miami beach-ready, skin-baring extreme muscle tees recalling the sweaty sleaze era. If these high fashion examples sound a bit much then check out the IG feeds of Vedang Raina, Ishaan Khatter and Shahid Kapoor, who have been the biggest muscle tee advocates. These hunks with rippling muscles have flaunted these tops to the gym and also during their downtime. Clearly, the muscle tee is both Gen Z and Millennial approved.

While we're on the subject, it's worth discussing how the muscle tee came to be in popular consciousness. After the Jazz Age, tank tops in Hollywood films became a metaphor for machismo, rebellion, rage, athleticism and also a hint of villainy. Ren McCormack in Footloose (1984), Nicholas Cage in Con Air (1997), and Bruce Willis in Die Hard (1988) are some of the noteworthy examples.

Also worth mentioning are 1950s' film icons like Marlon Brando and James Dean known for their penchant for sleeveless, fitted shirts asserting their muscle identity. Picture sleeveless design, the often relaxed fit (or not!) – built for movement and breathability. Whether you're lifting weights, heading for a run, or just chilling with your significant other, the muscle tee embodies ease, comfort and breathability without compromising on style. Superimpose that effortlessness with breathability and quick-drying capabilities and you've got a killer piece for your heavy-duty workouts. From the seventies, the muscle tank became a go-to gym essential as it kept athletes cooler while working out or playing sports. Moreover, the absence of sleeves allows air to access more of the body and cool it down better than other tee shirts could.

During the 80s fitness boom, muscle shirts became way more popular and were offered in vibrant styles - from crop tops to graphic prints. The rise of bodybuilding and surfing culture brought the era's youth's collective focus back on the physique and that's when the sleeveless muscle tee became the perfect piece to show off pronounced biceps and sculpted shoulders. Soon the muscle tee was everywhere and was worn with just about anything - from jeans to shorts to trackpants. In Bollywood, fitness icons like Hrithik Roshan, Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan can be easily credited for the sleeveless gym shirt craze as they wore them both off and on screen with elan in the nineties and early aughts inspiring several generations of fitness enthusiasts.

They also became a synonym for the nineties' soft grunge era as brands presented them with rips and cuts. They were often styled with denim cutoffs or low-waist jeans signifying rebellion and a street cred.

Gucci

Cut to the present and the likes of Gucci and Versace have made them uber chic crafting them in luxe materials proposing them as an ideal separate for a night out or a date night. Something which can even be layered under a tux or an evening jacket. Moreover, some boundary pushing labels like KVRT STVFF and Salt Murphy have reimaged them in latex and cotton jersey with rips. Harshad Panchal, Lead Designer XYXX says, "What Gucci is doing right now is a masterclass in elevating performance wear into directional, runway-driven statement pieces. The compression-fit muscle tee isn’t just functional, it’s sculpted, aerodynamic, and intentionally minimal, tapping into the ongoing luxury-athleisure and second-skin silhouette movement.

The key is in the fit; it should contour the shoulders and chest without being overly tight and fall cleanly at the waist. In premium fabrics like micro modal or breathable cotton blends, it becomes a smart investment piece for summer."

For workouts, the designer suggests leaning into its performance DNA. "Pair it with tapered technical shorts or slim joggers in moisture-wicking fabrics, finished with streamlined trainers. Think tonal styling - all-black, slate grey, or monochrome neutrals, for a sharp, high-impact gym aesthetic. For off-duty or street styling, contrast is key. Offset the sleek, sculpted upper half with relaxed or oversized bottoms, wide-leg trousers, parachute pants, or utilitarian cargos. Layering adds dimension: throw on an open lightweight shirt, a boxy overshirt, or even a cropped jacket for a fashion-week-ready edge. Minimal silver chains, a structured cap, or futuristic sunglasses can amplify the look without overpowering it," he adds.

The modern approach is about versatility and proportion play, treating the compression muscle tee as a foundational hero piece that transitions seamlessly from performance mode to elevated streetwear with intentional styling. Rizwan Shaikh, Creative Director & Founder - Nafs observes that with the kind of heat we’re experiencing currently, muscle tees are definitely having a moment. "Vedang Raina, Shahid Kapoor and many have been wearing them well because they’re functional and stylish. It's imperative to get the fit right and invest in breathable fabric, something that feels effortless rather than overly styled," says he. Compression muscle tees, like the ones seen at Gucci’s recent showcase, work great for workouts with performance shorts or joggers. "For casual outings, you can pair them with relaxed denims, cargos, or layered under an open shirt or lightweight jacket, it keeps the look sporty but polished," he adds.

Here are some of the season's hot picks:

Gucci

Styling this versatile black muscle tank is a no brainer. Style it with a linen bomber or a lightweight shacket and complete the look with a pair of dress pants.

Versace

Ideal for beach outings, offset these with either a pair of surfer shorts or swimming trunks and complete your look with sunnies.

KVRT STVFF

This Mechanic body gear is ideal for a hot sunny day. Style it with a pair of linen shorts in the same tone.

Salt Murphy

This latex tank isn't for the faint-hearted. Perhaps pair it with a pair of crochet drawstring pants or a pair of sequinned trousers to offset the texture.
