Sir David Beckham’s Knighting in Style

Golden boy, now, Sir Beckham, dons the first-ever menswear piece by Victoria Beckham

What could be more quintessentially British than a morning suit, a monarch in presence and Britain's most popular footballer David Beckham looking unfairly good?

At the Windsor Castle on Tuesday Beckham finally became Sir Beckham, knighted by King Charles himself. In true Beckham fashion, he turned the occasion into a masterclass in marital synergy and immaculate tailoring because, of course, Sir David wore Victoria.

The newly minted knight donned the first-ever tailored menswear piece from his wife’s eponymous label and allegedly first-ever clothing she has ever that he has worn publicly: a charcoal three-piece morning suit cut from British wool mohair and tailored within an inch of perfection.

The lapels were sharply tailored while the fit featuring a cutaway coat and formal striped trousers in matching grey rather than the usual buff or dove tone, kept the silhouette long and tonal. Striped formal trousers tapered ever so slightly, completed the line and reflected the refined through Victoria’s lens of minimalist sophistication.

The former British football captain, 50, paired the ensemble with a silver-grey silk tie, understated and symmetrical, and a white pocket square, folded flat in a simple presidential style. His black patent Oxford shoes, mirror-polished to ceremony standards, grounded the look without drawing attention — precisely how formal footwear should behave.

The morning suit which is long the preserve of weddings, Ascot, and royal ceremonies can easily veer into costume. However, what made Beckham avoided that trap was by letting the tailoring do the work. The cut was sharp, the colour contemporary, and the symbolism quietly personal.

King Charles, himself a lifelong advocate of British craftsmanship, reportedly admired the suit. Beckham later said the monarch “was quite impressed,” adding that he had looked at old photos of the King’s morning suits for inspiration.

Speaking to The Guardian, Sir David said: "He was quite impressed with my suit. He’s kind of the most elegantly dressed man that I know, so he inspired quite a few of my looks over the years and he definitely inspired this look. I looked at old pictures of him when he was quite young in morning suits and I was like, okay, that’s what I want to wear, so I gave it to my wife and she did it.”

Beckham shared the moment in his own words on Instagram:

“I can't even begin to describe what a special day it is for me today, a boy born in East London, to receive a Knighthood from His Majesty The King. I am truly humbled and so grateful for this honour… Playing for my country will always be the proudest moment in my career… Football gave me everything and it also allowed me to travel from a young age… I’ve been lucky to work with incredible organisations like UNICEF, the Royal Foundation and the King’s Foundation… All I have ever wanted to do is to make my family proud. My beautiful wife… my children… I love you all so much.”

The ceremony, held at Windsor Castle, also included Beckham’s wife Victoria, now Lady Beckham, and his parents, Ted Beckham and Sandra West. The honour comes more than two decades after Beckham was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2003, with a knighthood nomination dating back to 2011.

Beckham, whose football career spanned clubs including Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, and the England national team, has also been widely recognised for his philanthropic work. His knighthood acknowledges not only his sporting achievements but also his long-standing charitable contributions, including support for UNICEF, the Royal Foundation, and the King’s Foundation, as well as engagement with the UK Armed Forces.
