While it’s hard enough to manage both oily and dry skin concerns, there’s a special kind of challenge that people with sensitive skin face on a daily basis. It’s my personal belief that no one suffers with more skincare concerns that those with this kind of skin type. Sure, I don’t have any personal experience – my skin type is decisively oily – but having known enough and more people with sensitive skin, I’ve seen first-hand just how challenging it can get for them to manage their skin and its woes.
From environmental to lifestyle-induced, the triggers for sensitive skin ensure that people with that skin type have to be extra careful when building their skincare regime and choosing products that’ll work for them. The biggest mistake one could make is to assume that sensitive skin needs to be left alone as is because like with every other type of skin, this one too needs to be tended to. Obviously, using products that are designed to treat sensitive skin, nurturing and nourishing it without causing any irritation.
It’s not easy, yes, but certainly not impossible!
What are the triggers for sensitive skin?
However, before you go about choosing skincare products, it’s important to understand what’s causing skin irritation to begin with. Once you’ve identified the causes, it’ll be easier to fix them. Particularly those that have a lot to do with how your lifestyle and daily routines.
Here are some common triggers:
Skincare products that are rich in fragrance or alcohol-based or both
Perfumes and deodorants
Harsh cleansers or exfoliants
Frequent touching of the face
Stress or hormonal shifts
Extreme weather conditions
Allergic reactions to specific foods
As you can see, while some factors are skincare-related, the others are part of one’s lifestyle that need to be fixed before going about building a skincare routine.
How to choose a moisturiser for sensitive skin?
Ensure everything you’re using is actually meant for your skin type. A lot of products, no matter how good, aren’t made keeping in mind the concerns of sensitive skin, which is why they end causing more harm than good. Get rid of those products and only purchase the ones that are compatible with your skin.
Fragrance-free skincare products usually work best for sensitive skin. Any product that’s rich in hypoallergenic ingredients will also suit such skin type. You should also check for pH-balancing formulas that’ll also provide relief and prevent irritation.
Those with sensitive skin should also stay away from actives (retinol, salicylic acid, etc.) that are known to create mild irritation but don’t work for sensitive skin. Instead, opt for products rich in ceramides and peptides – they’ll nourish and soothe your skin and replenish your skin barrier.
Esquire Tip: When all else fails, opt for aloe vera which is known for its healing properties and will help calm your aggravated skin issues
