5 Indian Heritage Stays Where Past Meets Present

Modern comforts soothe the body. Old charms soothe the soul. These heritage properties in India expertly marry the two

By Srishti Magan | LAST UPDATED: JUN 24, 2025

India has a rich history, found preserved in the intricate carvings on temple walls and old forts or in verandahs that invite rain, romance, and ruminations. If given a chance, most of us would love to step into the past… but with modern comforts. After all, the stepwells and jharokhas (windows) are great for an Instagram photo, but not for the Indian summers.

Modern comforts soothe the body. Old charms soothe the soul. These heritage properties in India expertly marry the two.

Ahilya Fort, Madhya Pradesh

Nestled atop the river Narmada, Ahilya Fort is the former residence of Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar. Originally built in the 18th century, the fort was transformed into a hotel in 2000. It houses 19 rooms spanning across 3 acres of courtyards, fountains, and gardens. You can enjoy a meal at the mandap (with a menu fixed by Prince Richard Holkar). Or play with 18th-century cannon balls at the petanque court, before cooling off with a dip in the pool. And if you’re looking for deep relaxation, the traditional nimadi massage is on offer.

Maison Perumal, Pondicherry

Maison Perumal is a period bungalow. Or more accurately, a 130-year-old Franco-Tamil heritage property in Pondicherry, which took a year to transform into a heritage property. Today, its minimalistic interiors blend locally sourced materials with the richness of history. The balconies with stained glass windows lead to white-plaster walls that champion the works of local artists.

Enjoy novel fixtures, period furniture, and culinary delights at the terrace and courtyard dining areas. You can even shop with the chef and source fresh produce!

Deo Bagh, Gwalior

A part of the Neemrana Hotel properties, Deo Bagh is Gwalior’s only garden hotel, with the gardens checkered into nine parts. Once the summer house of Sardar Deorao Bhausaheb Jadhav and his son Sardar Krishnarao Deorao Jadhav, the property still houses Maratha temples from the 17th-18th century. Beyond its 15 palatial rooms (including 3 suites), the property is famous for birdwatching, authentic Bhopali cuisine, and an evening tea with peacocks! Yes, the lush gardens and surrounding areas often see the majestic bird perched atop walls.

Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jodhpur

If your vibe is indulgence, then what better place than India’s golden sandstone marvel, Umaid Bhawan. One of the last great palaces built in India, it took 15 years to complete. Today, it remains part royal residence, part museum, and part luxurious Taj hotel. Step inside the 26-acre property and you're greeted by soaring domes, Art Deco interiors, and marble staircases that echo with stories of Maharajas past. The rooms? Grand doesn't even begin to cover it. Expect vintage clocks, gilded mirrors, and private balconies overlooking the Blue City. Sip champagne in the throne room, dine under frescoed ceilings, or unwind at the subterranean zodiac pool (it’s lined with zodiac signs).

Belgadia Palace, Mayurbhanj

The most underrated gem on the list, Belgadia Palace, was built in the 1800s. Combining the Victorian architectural style with elements of Georgian décor, the property is a 5-hour drive away from Bhubhaneshwar (the state capital of Odisha), Ranchi, and Kolkata. Curated vintage finds, pastel tones, and antique chandeliers on high ceilings transport you to the era gone by… while reminding you that you’re part of a legacy. With a vision to build sustainable tourism with social impact, the property supports local crafts, like the traditional Chhau Performance, works of Dokra artists, handicraft village walk (with artists creating sabai-based handicrafts and furniture), and more. You can even spot a black and white chequered chessboard amongst the mango groves.
