Esquire Recommends: The Best Matcha Spots in India Right Now

Please stop having B-grade matcha; there’s better out there

You know the phrase...with great matcha comes great responsibility. Or, I think?

Look, we’ve all had bad matcha. The gritty, grass-flavoured nonsense passed off as “ceremonial grade” that tastes like it was brewed in a flowerpot. Or worse, the oat milk swamp disguised as a ‘gut-healthy’ drink. But somewhere between TikTok health trends and café chains milking the green for aesthetics, a few places in India decided to actually do it right.

Great matcha has gone from monks to Milan, wellness blogs to fashion week, and now, to some of the slickest cafés across Delhi, Bombay, and Bangalore.

Blondie, MumbaiZomato

Ceremonial-grade, shade-grown, hand-whisked… lucky for you, we’ve sipped our way through the city’s best green brews (and lived to tell the tale). Whether you like yours straight-up and earthy or sugar-dusted with collagen foam and mango swirls, these 10 spots across Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore are putting India on the matcha map.

MUMBAI

Blondie, Khar

The city’s first dedicated matcha bar, and arguably the finest. Their matcha is sourced from Kagoshima, Japan, and the drinks are both meditative and madness-inducing in the best way possible. . You can keep it simple with a legit hot matcha or lose your mind over a Mango Matcha Latte topped with cold foam. There’s even a torched marshmallow S’mores one if you’re feeling unhinged.

Tokyo Matcha Bar

Tokyo Matcha Bar started as a cloud kitchen and now they have a full-fledged dine-in spot for matcha devotees. Their Cookie & Cream Matcha is unapologetically decadent, but it’s the Matcha Vanilla Bean Latte that’s a true comfort drink. We absolutely love it. It’s not subtle, it’s not chill—it’s chaotic good. Like if Hello Kitty opened a café in Bandra.

Mokai

Known for its retro diner aesthetic and breezy crowd, Mokai’s matcha menu goes hard. Uji-sourced matcha, whisked with flair, served in variations like Taro Boba Matcha, Hot Madagascar Vanilla Matcha, and Pistachio Matcha. It’s matcha with drama, and we’re here for it. Also, they serve a Dirty Matcha Latte—which, honestly, sounds like your new situationship.

Espressos Anyday, GurugramZomato

DELHI-NCR

Dirty Good, New Delhi

Our favourite Delhi bar has reinvented itself into pickleball fitness club with matcha…basically me at 16 when I discovered Tumblr. This new-age café does coconut water matcha, iced cold matcha, and a pistachio matcha latte that feels like it belongs in a Wes Anderson film. The interiors are cool, but the drinks are actually really good too. A solid go-to for your Sundays.

Espressos Anyday, Gurugram

If you haven’t already heard of this place, honestly, what are you doing? This place is OMO’s much cooler cousin, with even better food. Yes, they do great coffee, but the matcha menu is genius. Think coconut foam matcha, berry-layered matcha, collagen glow-up matcha, and even matcha lemonade. Grace Muivah has created an entire matcha ecosystem here—and we’re drinking every bit of it.

Genre, Defence Colony

It’s part café, part bar, part vinyl haven—and yes, they do a mean matcha too. Genre keeps things understated and refined, much like the neighbourhood it’s in. Their matcha latte is smooth, earthy, and exactly what you need before you dig into some tapas and pisco cocktails. You can order a matcha latte at noon, and a pisco cocktail with Korean lamb meatballs by 8pm. It’s giving cultured.

Genre, New DelhiZomato

Got Tea, Multiple Locations

Minimalist interiors and matcha that’s anything but basic. Got Tea plays the hits: Vanilla Bean Matcha, Matcha Lemonade, and the ever-reliable Hojicha. Their ceremonial-grade matcha comes from Shizuoka, Japan, and the seasonal Mango Matcha is a must. Pro tip: pair it with their K-toast or flaky Korean salt bread. Also, don’t forget the cold foam.

BANGALORE

Sakura Matcha Bar, Indiranagar

Bangalore’s OG matcha-only café, and still the front-runner. If you’re matcha-curious in Bangalore, start here. It’s pet-friendly, has blueberry and lavender lattes, and sometimes hosts flea markets. You’ll sip a well-balanced Strawberry Matcha Latte, consider getting a dog, and wonder if you should just move to Indiranagar already. They even have a loyalty program. You know, for when you’re fully converted.

Kind Roastery and Brew Room, Indiranagar

We love a brand that doesn’t gatekeep its caffeine. Kind Roastery might be a coffee-first joint, but their Iced Matcha Latte and Matcha Melonade hit hard—especially when paired with flaky in-house pastries. Bonus: it’s a good first date spot if you’re trying to seem cultured but chill.

The Caffeine Baar, Koramangala

They’re known for their Chikkamagaluru-sourced coffee, but the matcha here deserves its own fan club. Try the Iced Matcha Latte or the Brown Sugar Espresso Matcha if you like your green drinks with a caffeine twist.
