Amrut Distilleries has just released CafeX, and it's a genuine first for Indian whisky: a single malt matured in casks seasoned with coffee. The distillery teamed up with Harley Estate, a well-known coffee plantation in Karnataka, to make it happen. Instead of the usual wine or sherry barrels, the whisky spends time in casks that once held estate-grown coffee beans. Only 2,400 bottles are being made, and they'll sell for somewhere around ₹14,000 to ₹14,500. Amrut has never been a distillery that plays it safe. Over the years, it's released whiskies like Naarangi, Spectrum and Herald, each one a departure from how whisky is supposed to be made. CafeX fits right into that pattern, except this time the inspiration isn't coming from abroad. It's coming from home. Rather than leaning on the usual sherry, bourbon or port casks, Amrut decided to season its own casks with coffee, adding a layer of flavour that complements the whisky instead of overpowering it.

The Harley Estate Connection

The coffee itself doesn't try to dominate the whisky. It's grown at Harley Estate, a plantation that's been around since 1864, tucked into the hills of Sakaleshpur in the Western Ghats. Those beans are used to season the casks before the whisky even goes in to age, so the coffee's influence comes through gradually, almost like a background note tying the two industries together. The end result feels tied to a specific place rather than just being a gimmick.

What Does Amrut CafeX Taste Like?

CafeX has a deep golden, honey-like colour. On the nose, you'll pick up notes of fresh capsicum and jalapeno, vanilla, citrus and a touch of mocha, with floral notes coming through after that. On the palate, orchard fruit meets a bit of spice, some dried chilli, and a soft mocha sweetness. The finish is long, warm and dry. Coffee shows up throughout, but it stays in the background, more of a subtle accent than the main event.

With only 2,400 bottles released globally, CafeX is positioned firmly in the collectible category. The expected retail price of around ₹14,000 to ₹14,500 reflects both its limited production and experimental maturation.
