Yes, you read that right!

You love it, we love it, everyone loves it. And now it’s found a place amongst the best in the world, and honestly, is anyone even surprised?

The popular travel guide, TasteAtlas, recently released their list of the world’s best wraps, 38 in number to be precise, and kathi roll from Kolkata has been ranked at the 6th position.

Yes, the 6th best in the world!

As you can see from the full list, it’s Greece’s gyros that’s made it to the numero uno spot. And as someone who has had it in Mykonos, I can tell you that gyros is indeed that good.

The other wraps ahead of our kathi roll include sangchu ssam from South Korea, Turkey’s tantuni, enchiladas from Mexico and carne asada burrito from San Diego in USA. But we’re going to focus only on kathi roll because honestly, that’s all we care about it, right?

India is such a food-loving nation that we’re all constantly debating which city has the best food, and which cuisine is better than the others. Lucknow, Delhi, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Kolkata, Amritsar, Goa and many, many other cities are always vying for the top spot. Frankly, there’s no end to this discussion, not because we can’t arrive at a consensus but because each of these cities have incredible food and how could anyone ever choose one over the other?

But kathi rolls? Now that’s a whole different argument. As is the one that says that Kolkata indeed has the best one in India. Kebab meat skewered to perfection before being wrapped in a flaky bread – what's not to love, isn’t it?

Food historians will tell you that this delectable dish came about from a rather clever thought from the iconic Nizam’s restaurant in Kolkata. Apparently, British officers (back when India wasn’t an independent nation) preferred eating kebabs not with their hands and the cooks at the restaurant decided to wrap them in a parantha-like bread for their ease. Those British officers might’ve not realised but their issues resulted in a dish so brilliant, it’s still winning hearts across the world!

And now that it has officially been declared amongst the best wraps in the world, even if it isn’t the top spot, it’s time you planned a trip to Kolkata to savour the deliciousness of the kathi roll there. Yes, we know it won’t happen right away so maybe order one from your nearest food joint? It might not be as good as the one from Kolkata but hey, how bad can a kathi roll be anyway!
