Bass, Bal, and Brown Magic: Indo Warehouse Debut At Coachella

Indo Warehouse on the weekend turned Coachella into Indochella like it’s no one's business. Making their historic debut as the first-ever South Asian electronic music collective, the NYC-born DJ producer duo, Kunal Merchant and Kahani aka Armaan Gupta are founders of the record label and platform. They are known for fusing deep techno beats with South Asian classical influences.

All sounds are wrapped for the ultimate hypnotic soundscape that get you feeling like you're stepping into a sacred rave. Exactly what happened on the first weekend at Indio, California.

Indo Warehouse with their deep and full spine-vibrating beats performed at Coachella spotlighting unmistakable sounds of Punjabi Dhol, colourful Gujarati Garba attire spinning, clapping and jumping to the rhythm — an ode to global South Asian diasporic movement.

In just three years, Indo Warehouse has moved their base from intimate New York city clubs to sold out international venues across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

What more, the duo paid tribute to the late fashion designer Rohit Bal that not only reflected in their attire- signature motifs: the lotus, peacock, and rose that made the ensembles, taking a piece of tradition to the global stage. Rohit Bal's influence also reflected in the visual storytelling- a mark of their rootedness with their South Asian identity and a powerful illustration of artistic innovation.

Not only that the collective popular for their electronic music including sampled tracks like "Chaiyya Cahiyya", "Shava Shava Balle Balle", "Tiger Eyes" brought along 25 performers (yes, you read it right) spanning musicians, vocalists to dancers.

Anvaya, comprising singer and songwriter Sonia, Kaushal, producer and multi-instrumentalist, drummer Nihal Singh, and his dhol drumlin, dance teams Raas Ruckus and Baaghi Bhangra were all part of the high-energy performance.

At Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Indo Warehouse's performance felt deeply reverential and refreshingly rebellious. From songs ranging from Hindi to Tamil, the atmosphere as heady, hypnotic and diaspora done right!

The label burnt the desert down with their velvet basslines, sonic rhythms, that was live streamed like other performances at the two-weekend long music and art festival. Long after their exit from the Gobi stage, the energy of the high-octane performance lingered; leaving us with a sense of repatriation.

Set to go on an international tour after the music festival, Indo Warehouse will be back on 18 April again for another night of frequencies that make your soul groove at Coachella!
