The History of Sound Trailer Promises Everything You've Wanted From The Movie
Paul Mescal singing? Sign us up!
Paul Mescal and Josh O'Connor is a match made in cinematic heaven and that's not even the most exciting thing about Oliver Hermanus' The History of Sound. How incredible is that, isn't it?
Ever since the movie was announced, and the two Hollywood heartthrobs were cast together and opposite each other in the movie, everyone's been abuzz with anticipation. There was enough and more chatter about the lead pair's probable chemistry, especially since it's a 'period' film, based on Ben Shattuck's short story of the same name, and both Mescal and O'Connor are fantastic performers as well.
Besides, the film had been nominated for the Palme d'Or, after its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.
Now that the trailer is out, it's for all to see and judge and so far, everyone's been only loving it.
Following the relationship between David (O'Connor) and Lionel (Mescal), who first meet each other in 1917 while attending the Boston Music Conservatory, the film is about their unfolding dynamics, as they travel together after World War I, through the summer of 1920 recording folk songs. As the music hits various notes, so does their love and soon, longing enters the story. Lionel is from a farm background while David comes from privilege; while the former has musical talent, the latter isn't as gifted in that department. Their differences, somehow, bring them closer and it's music that both bonds and binds them.
One of the most beautiful aspects of the trailer (and the movie, obviously) is Mescal's singing. He's good. Truly good. It's a surprise, yes, but a pleasant one. As is the general melancholy peppered throughout the trailer. Everything is sombre. Tender, even. Which is telling because we, the viewers, are convinced of the emotional upheavals sure to come in this tale of love, lost and longing.
Then, there's the chemistry between the two.
I'm not sure how you imagined it to be but even for me, who was convinced the two would have incredible chemistry, it's quite surprising to see how things are so much more than that. Both Mescal and O'Connor are looking to be in top form, and together, they fit perfectly well. It's a pair that isn't just great-looking but also great to look at together. Almost making you wonder why no other filmmaker has cast them together ever before.
Essentially, The History of Sound is looking to be the kind of movie you just have to experience. There's no escaping it, yes, but also why would you want to escape? September 15 is when it hits theatres. Come soon, that still a while away date!
