Is Any Other Actor Having As Much Fun With Their Craft As Nicole Kidman?

There are few actors having as much fun with their craft as Nicole Kidman.

Come to think of it, she’s everywhere. On red carpets and award functions where she’s routinely nominated and celebrated. On social media where her fan clubs can’t stop posting about her. Not to forget, her films and shows that ensure you’re watching her perform, rather consistently, pretty much through the year.

No other actor is doing it like her. No one else is expanding their repertoire quite like Kidman. The variety of roles, the skilful performances. No other star is shining brighter than her right now.

Last year alone she had played the lead in two movies, A Family Affair and Babygirl, both of which had her romancing much younger actors, coincidentally. She also was a part of the animated film, Spellbound. Then there were the two OTT shows – Expats and The Perfect Couple. She was everywhere and we were watching it all.

For an actor who started working in 1983, Kidman doesn’t seem to slow down one bit. Rather she seems to have picked up pace unlike any of her peers. She also executive produces projects, not all of them starring her so you know she’s busier than the busiest of stars in Hollywood.

But it’s not all just hectic schedules – Kidman is enjoying it all. As is evident from her performances which never reflect any kind of fatigue. For someone who we’ve been seeing on screen for four decades, she’s chameleon-like when it comes to playing her parts. You don’t see the effort; you just enjoy the execution. You don’t mind her frequent releases because she’s just that good.

Take, for instance, her most recent release.

In Babygirl, the much talked about erotic thriller, Kidman plays a powerful CEO who lets go of her power for a much younger man she has an affair with. She’s absolutely electric in the movie. In the hands of a lesser actor, the film would’ve made you laugh at her character. But Kidman’s performance is so subsuming, you can’t help but watch in quite obedience as she gets on all fours, as instructed by Harris Dickinson. You almost want her to have that cookie and drink that tall glass of milk (no pun intended!), almost as much as Dickinson, if not more.

There’s abandon in her performance. She’s not embarrassed. And she doesn’t let you feel any such emotion either. Babygirl is evocative instead, and only because she’s performed it so.

Kidman’s taken ordinarily written characters and made them come alive with her performances. Made unconventional scripts turn around, without going conventional. She’s been doing it for a long, long time and yet, it feels like she’s only getting started.

In everything that she’s done last year, you can she’s had a blast. And so have all of us.
