Lucifer 2 Promises Action, Suspense And Intrigue

A few years ago, I remember walking out of the cinema hall dazed. Dazed because I had watched one of the best raw action performances with a political premise and packed with entertainment. A pure-mic drop moment was when the crowd in the theatre gasped as it was finally revealed by end of the film, Lucifer, that Stephern Nedumpally, the quiet, cautious leader is the in fact, crime lord, Khureshi Ab'raam.

Years after first film, Lucifer, came out, part of a trilogy directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran and written by Murali Gopy, Mohanlal is making back on big screen in Lucifer 2: Empuraan on March 27. The first movie from Malayalam cinema to be released in IMAX, the tale is set to unravel Stephen's (Mohanlal) deeper connection to the underworld and his empire.

While the Part 1 kicked off with the death of the CM of Kerala, P.K. Ramdas, leaving the throne empty for a worthy successor, the new trailer for the upcoming sequel teases the past of Stephen. It hints at the movie giving clues to what Lucifer's true past is. The ruthless godfather that controls the international crime circuit and the power game, not just in Kerala but around the globe.

With a lot more cheers expected by Mohanlal fanboys in the theatre, the star-studded cast including Prithviraj, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Vivek Oberoi, Aamir Khan's siste, Nusratand legendary Mohanlal will be seen expanding the universe of Lucifer this time. The hidden Illuminati concept that we saw referenced to in the prequel will still have a role to play in the upcoming sequel. In Lucifer, although subtly hinted, the unseen forces that string the world together will be highlight as the setting moves outside Kerala. We will be getting glimpse into the crime syndicates, the larger conspiracies at hand that go unnoticed through subtle messages and cryptic dialogues. Why do we say this? Prithviraj's love for layered narrative as a director is pretty obvious.

The fight is not between good and the bad. Its between evil and evil. So, don't expect anything less than that. The 3 minutes 50 seconds high-octane trailer is enough to vouch for what's coming. An intense narrative backed by world-class technical execution.

We saw in Lucifer that at the centre of the political upheaval after the death of the chief minister of Kerala is Stephen Nedumpally, a crime lord but also a guardian of justice-until we figured out that although an MLA at one point, he is not just a rookie politician but international crime lord. But what the first film didn't answer was why he is the international crime lord and how exactly did he build his empire. We are told through the illuminati reference that only a handful really powerful people control the power in this world, but who are they?

Next question that we could get answers to is what happened to Nedumpally before he left Kerala. The trailer hints at a past full of violence that is somehow tied to the power struggles in the present, and betrayals. If he left Kerala for good, what has led him to be back again? Moreover, the trailer suggests "enemy of the enemy is a friend", so who exactly is the enemy here. More so, how are Zayed and Stephen connected? Can Zayed Masood be trusted?

Mainly, who is the guy in the black jacket with a red dragon on it. With family dynamics unfolding, dirty politics getting worse, Lucifer 2: Empuraan is an intense-action packed film about power on a global scale that all ties to Lucifer.
