Is Glen Powell's 'The Running Man' Worth Rooting For?
The actor's new movie, also starring Colman Domingo, comes out later this year
One of the internet's currently-preferred 'boyfriends', and definitely one of the most excitingly-popular leading men of Hollywood, Glen Powell is back with another explosive entertainer, and as expected, everyone has thoughts.
The Running Man, Powell's newest offering combines three different genres - dystopian drama, black comedy and action - and is looking to, well, have an extraordinary run at the box office. What makes the movie particularly on-point is the fact that it's set in a reality show where people are being chased by professional killers, and the odds of such a game show actually coming up in the next few years are rather high, to be fair.
Powell stars as a young man who has volunteered for said show, set in the near-future where such shows have become the norm. As per the official memo on the movie, this show is, simply put, a deadly competition where contestants, known as Runners, must survive 30 days while being hunted by professional assassins, with every move broadcast to a bloodthirsty public and each day bringing a greater cash reward.
Powell's character has no option but to enter the show since he needs the money to save his sick daughter's life. But unlike what the show's producers expect to happen, Powell proves to be quite a sensation, outwitting every challenge thrown his way, becoming a fan favourite. Essentially, he must now outwit not just the Hunters, but the entire audience that's completely clued in just to see him fail.
While you & I might be tired just reading and thinking about this plotline, Powell is in full form running around, jumping, fighting and trying to stay alive amidst all the explosives in the trailer.
The film also stars Colman Domingo as the host of this life-threatening show, and we're confident he's got a lot more to do than just, well, hosting.
The film is based on a novel by Stephen King so if you have read it, you'll be familiar with the plot and how it rolls out for Powell's character. Though we're quite sure the film's director, Edgar Wright, has many a twists and turns for those of you who may think you've pre-empted it all.
There's still some time before the movie comes out though. The Running Man will release on November 7 - that's still a few months away. But since it stars Powell, it's got the internet already talking about it. Considering the run he's been having these past few years with films such as Anyone But You, Hit Man and Twisters, fans are anticipating another big-ticket bonanza for the actor. And to be fair, the film is looking like every bit the kind that Powell excels in. You know, those big-screen, thrill-seeking endeavours that the Top Gun: Maverick actor has excelled in.
Will he strike again? We'll find out in due time, of course. For now, you can watch the trailer and judge for yourself if it's something you're going to be, excuse the pun, running to the theatres for.
