With Independence Day and Raksha Bandhan creating 3–4 day breaks, destinations like Sri Lanka, Nepal and Thailand fit easily into this budget, covering flights, mid-range stays, food and short excursions, especially if flights are booked early.
August 2026 gives Indian travellers two real long weekends to work with. Independence Day falls on Saturday, August 15, so taking just one day off, Friday, August 14, turns it into a four-day break running through Monday, August 17 - yes, you will need to take Monday off to. Later in the month, Raksha Bandhan lands on Friday, August 28, creating a natural three-day weekend from the 28th to the 30th with no leave required at all. Either window is enough time for a short international trip, and a surprising number of countries are reachable for under Rs 70,000 per person, flights, stay and food included.
Colombo is one of the cheapest international flights out of Delhi right now, with round-trip fares running around Rs 30,000 to Rs 32,000 in August. That leaves close to Rs 40,000 for three nights, which comfortably covers a mid-range hotel, meals, and a day trip to Galle Fort or the hill town of Kandy. On visas, Sri Lanka's tourist ETA has been completely free since May 25, 2026, when the fee waiver was extended to 40 countries including India. It allows a 30-day stay and is approved online at eta.gov.lk within hours.
Kathmandu is even easier on the wallet. Round-trip flights from Delhi have been going for as little as Rs 15,000 to Rs 17,000 in August. With flights this cheap, most of the Rs 70,000 budget can go toward a few days in Kathmandu and a side trip to Pokhara for lake and mountain views. On visas, Indians need no visa and no fee at all under the 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship between India and Nepal, just a valid passport or Election Commission Voter ID; Aadhaar alone is not officially accepted at entry.
Round-trip flights from Delhi have dipped as low as Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 in August, leaving enough room for a few nights in the city, street food runs, and a day trip to the floating markets, all comfortably inside the Rs 70,000 mark. On visas, entry stays free for Indians. A May 2026 proposal briefly threatened to shift India to a paid visa-on-arrival system, but Thailand reversed that on July 14, 2026, keeping entry free while trimming the maximum stay from 60 to 30 days.
Whichever weekend you pick, book flights early. August fares on all three routes climb fast as the holiday dates get closer.
