Shirtless suits are red carpet's newest flex, seen on the likes of Harry Styles, Shawn Mendes, Barry Keoghan and Heated Rivalry stars Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams. Over the years, the sartorial rules have loosened up and men – both millennial and Gen Z are okay serving some rizz minus a tuxedo shirt or a mesh vest under their dinner jacket. The recently concluded New York Fashion Week sent out some remarkable shirtless suiting looks seen at Coach, Cult Gaia and Christian Siriano.

However, it was brands like Gucci, Dior and Saint Laurent who proposed classic evening suiting minus any shirt or T-shirt way before. Picture Connor Storrie in a YSL smoking jacket flashing his taut chest or Troye Sivan serving oomph in a skin-baring Tom Ford look. Shirtlessness is the new black! Look at Harry Style's trippy IG feed or scroll down our very own Tiger Shroff's life in looks - it's hard to miss the trend.

It all started at Gucci’s fall/winter 2026 show by Demna during Milan Fashion Week when shirtless tailoring had everyone sit up and take note. The former Balenciaga creative rekindled the unapologetic sexiness of Tom Ford-era Gucci. Demna's dudes flashed chests and broke the codes of rigid menswear dressing. Also worth mentioning is Dior’s spring/summer 2026 menswear show by artistic director Jonathan Anderson who unravelled men's torsos turning them into a new erogenous zone on the runway. A few seasons ago, a men’s Bar jacket worn without any shirt underneath would've been unheard of.

But the new Dior man isn't afraid to show up to a party in an embroidered frock coat with no shirt underneath it. In the past, designers like Hedi Slimane and Raf Simons have often exposed men's chests and flipped the script for menswear dressing. A sassy way to infuse rock ’n’ roll, punk and underground subcultures in clothing.

Designer Dhruv Vaish observes that the trend has stayed popular because men are moving away from super stiff, traditional suits and leaning into a more relaxed, confident vibe. "After the pandemic, no one really wanted to feel restricted by full corporate wear anymore. Skipping the shirt instantly makes a classic suit feel cooler, more effortless, and a lot less formal. It’s a sort of freedom that can be styled and made to look great," says Dhruv.

According to the designer, the most important thing is the fit when one's embracing this look. "Your jacket needs to sit flat against your chest and fit really well so it looks deliberate, not like you just forgot a shirt. You can balance out the bare skin by throwing on a simple pendant or thin chain, and pairing it with clean, sharp shoes to keep the whole look put-together," he adds.  Stylist Vikram Seth suggests letting the tailoring take centre stage. "Keep the suit sharp and relaxed, with minimal accessories and refined footwear, the look should feel sensual, confident and effortless,” quips Seth.
