The Bandhgalas To Invest In This Season

With wedding season around the corner, it's time to embrace the classic

By Manish Mishra | LAST UPDATED: NOV 19, 2025

Irrespective of the seasons and trends, the classic Bandhgala or the often called 'Prince Coat' has always been often the most sought-after piece among most Indian grooms and groomsmen.

This classic can easily be hailed as India's answer to the global tuxedo. Its origin can be traced back to the princely state of Jodhpur and this emblematic piece rose to prominence among royalty in the 19th century. Recently Vicky Kaushal was seen in a Manish Malhotra bandhgala suit accessorised with a nifty pocket square. And it's hard to overlook Ishaan Khatter's red carpet debut at Cannes film festival in a custom deep bordeaux velvet bandhgala by designer Gaurav Gupta. The silhouette reinterpreted the classic Indian high collar jacket with black zardozi Celtic knot embroidery. The actor completed the look with a black wrap silk shirt and tailored trousers. However, this wasn't the first time that Khatter was seen in Gupta's creation. Earlier this year too, he was spotted in an asymmetrical GG bandhgala in black velvet with the house's signature gold panther buttons.

Designers like Raghavendra Rathore, Mard by Abu Sandeep, Siddhartha Tytler, Shantanu & Nikhil, Kunal Anil Tanna, Kunal Rawal and Dhruv Vaish among others have reimagined the classic season after season making it more contemporary and relevant to the evolving tastes.

If you’re itching for a slice of glamour, then look no further than the realm of Manish Malhotra who's dressed the B-Town hunks like Sidharth Malhotra, Arjun Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor among others. Extrapolating contemporary elements like shimmer, thread embroideries and luscious textural ornamentations the designer has made it instantly desirable. Of late, he even unveiled a collection of handcrafted buttons and brooches.

Also worth mentioning is Mard by Abu Sandeep's classic approach to crafting pieces from the finest organic fabrics like silks, brocades, khadi, linen and wool. Their statement-making bandhgalas embracing metallic embellishments like mirror, gota and zardozi are likely to make you own every room you walk into. Think ivory, skin and beige tones with tone-on-tone surface texturing.

Alternatively, if you're on a hunt for a decidedly modern and statement-making bandhgala, Rohit Gandhi + Rahul Khanna's embroidered pieces emitting high-octane shimmer make the cut. Designer Rahul Khanna observes that the cut should be sharp through the shoulders and body — it should flatter your frame, not overwhelm it. "Opt for a versatile colour like deep charcoal, navy, or the classic black, depending on the occasion and your personal style. Pay close attention to details — ornate buttons, hand-finished linings, and subtle embroidery can quietly elevate the entire look". Contemporary styling is about smart, subtle upgrades. One of the easiest ways to modernise your bandhgala is by swapping the pocket square with a vintage brooch. It adds individuality and gives your look a current edge. "Pair the jacket with a silk shirt — ivory is always classic, but if you’re dressing for a wedding, consider a pop of emerald or deep jewel tones. Go for shirts with Mandarin collars and slightly visible cuffs, and finish with statement cufflinks — small details that bring a touch of luxury and personality," he adds.

A perfect fit, thoughtful detailing, and personalised styling can turn your bandhgala into a standout piece this season. Designer Vijesh Singhal - Founder, Bohame recommends opting for a silhouette that balances tradition with contemporary tailoring. "Look for clean, structured cuts with minimal embellishments that allow versatility across events. Fabrics like raw silk or premium suiting add a tactile richness while staying breathable and functional, making them ideal for Indian festivities," he suggests. Layering is key. One can style it over a longline shirt, turtleneck, or draped kurta to play with proportion and length. Moreover, swapping the churidar with structured trousers can amp up its appeal. "Straight-cut or wide-leg pants instantly modernise the silhouette. Add unexpected accessories - a leather harness belt, metallic brooch, or pocket scarf with contrasting texture makes the look feel curated. Footwear choices matter too. Instead of traditional juttis, opt for suede loafers or Chelsea boots for a modern twist," he adds.
