The Adidas Samba has been through plenty of makeovers over the years, and the latest iteration gives it a desi spin. Adidas Originals has teamed up with New Delhi-based sneaker and streetwear retailer VegNonVeg to rework the classic Samba as an open-back mule inspired by the traditional Indian Jutti.
The result is the Adidas Originals x VegNonVeg Samba Mule, a slip-on take on the familiar football-inspired silhouette that brings together Adidas’ global sneaker language with distinctly Indian design references. Think luxe leather, intricate botanical embroidery, gold detailing and a pointed, padded tongue that nods to the shape of a Jutti.
The collaboration marks VegNonVeg’s first footwear collaboration with Adidas Originals and builds on the retailer’s long-running interest in placing contemporary Indian culture within the wider global streetwear conversation.
The Samba Mule retains enough of the original Samba DNA to be immediately recognisable, but its construction has been reworked around the ease of slipping footwear on and off. The unisex shoe has Samba’s familiar T-toe profile, which extends down to a pointed padded tongue. This whole stretch features botanical embroidery that resembles the stem of a plant with leaves growing from it, culminating in a golden adidas Trefoil logo on the tongue. To give it a more jutti feel, this tongue is extended into the ankle by just a little bit, with collars lined in red for a splash of colour (juttis were also traditionally lined red, FYI). The three cream stripes on the side, however, remain intact.
The storytelling continues inside the shoe. To keep with VegNonVeg’s green and red logo, the left insole is green, and the right one is red, one for Veg and the other for NonVeg. Both carry traditional floral motifs in gold, with the lines “From VegNonVeg with love" and "To India and beyond" debossed into where the heel goes.
The Black Samba Mule is currently available globally through selected Adidas partner retailers and is priced at Rs 12,999 through VegNonVeg. The Silver Samba Mule, meanwhile, is exclusive to VegNonVeg in India and costs Rs 10,999. Only 280 pairs of the Silver edition are available, making that version the more limited release.
For those looking to get their hands on the collaboration, the Black version is available through selected Adidas partner retailers, while the Silver colourway can be purchased through VegNonVeg in India, subject to availability.
With the Samba already firmly established as one of Adidas’ most recognisable lifestyle sneakers, the VegNonVeg collaboration gives the silhouette a distinctly Indian identity while keeping its familiar proportions intact. The open-back construction also makes it an easy everyday option, particularly for anyone who already treats slipping shoes on and off as part of their daily routine.
