Turns out, having some bacteria in your skincare products is actually good for you. Yes, you read that right!
We all are well aware of the benefits of good bacteria for our gut (Hi, Kombucha!). But as per recent studies, these bacteria are also excellent for our skin. They help metabolise our skin, thereby thwarting environmental damage and ensuring our skin is looking its plump best. These microbes also play a vital role in ensuring our skin barrier is strong and healthy and our skin isn’t dry or suffering from inflammation.

Hence the need for probiotics in your skincare, to allow these bacteria to continue flourishing and making your skin flourish in the bargain too.
“Topical probiotics show promising results in reducing inflammation, strengthening the skin barrier, and managing conditions like acne and eczema. Some research even suggests they could slow down skin ageing,” says Mumbai-based dermatologist, Dr Madhuri Agarwal. And as a result, the beauty industry is jumping on the bandwagon and launching products that deal with the many microbes on your skin. Case in point: the new brand, Dab to Fab, led by Pranauthi S. “Focusing on skin microbiome is very essential and focusing on biotics play a crucial role in balancing the skin ecosystem,” she says.
How do probiotics in skincare recalibrate the skin microbiome?
Acting as peacekeepers, skin microbiomes help maintain the delicate balance of our skin's microscopic ecosystem. As per Dr Agarwal, “Probiotics compete with harmful bacteria for resources and space on the skin's surface, while also producing beneficial compounds that support skin barrier function.” She suggests looking for ingredients such as lactobacillus or bifidobacterium. “These are some of the most well-researched probiotic ingredients. But remember, they're not magic bullets. I tell my patients to think of them as team players working alongside other proven ingredients like ceramides which is known to keep the skin moisturised.”

Are probiotics meant for all skin types?
Probiotics are gentle in nature. Inflammation is the main culprit in most skin conditions hence a probiotic-laced skin-care regimen work for all skin types. “The key is to choose a formulation that suits your skin’s specific needs—lighter, gel-based probiotics formulation can work well for oily skin, while richer, cream-based formulations may be better for dry or sensitive skin,” says Dr Agarwal. However, it is also important to note that they are amazing for sensitive skin types.
“For individuals with dry or compromised skin, such as those with eczema, rosacea, or recovering from cosmetic procedures, probiotics can support barrier repair and improve hydration,” adds Pranauthi.
Do probiotics work similarly for our skin as they do for the digestive system?
Not exactly, because the mechanism of action is different. In the gut, probiotics work by improving digestion, supporting immune function, and maintaining a healthy balance of bacteria. “On the skin, they act more like a protective barrier, encouraging the growth of beneficial bacteria while keeping harmful bacteria at bay,” shares Dr Madhuri.

However, there’s growing evidence that gut health is closely linked to skin health, a concept known as the gut-skin connection. So what's good for your gut can also be good for your skin. As Dr Agarwal says, “Many of my patients see the best results when they do both together. But probiotic supplements aren’t one stop solution, and they work best when paired with a balanced diet and a skincare routine tailored to your skin’s needs.”
