We're in the festive season - it's time to upgrade your perfume shelf with the season's latest olfactory elixirs. Sensually charged and ideal for evenings, these potions are likely to keep you smelling incredible as you hop card parties and family dinners. The arrival of festivities in India also marks the onset of autumn - there's a pleasant nip in the air, days become short and nights are meant to be celebrated. Hence, it's crucial to embrace a scent which complements one's personal style and lasts longer.
MANE’s (a global leader in the fragrance and flavour design industry) research into Indian fragrance preferences indicates a growing interest in scents that are addictive, luxurious, and sensual. Fragrances built around amber, gourmand notes, narcotic florals, and dark woods are particularly appealing at the moment. These rich and expressive profiles are well suited to the party season, as they create a memorable impression and convey confidence, sophistication, and presence, qualities that are especially appropriate for evening celebrations.
Maxime Exler, Fine Fragrance Perfumer suggests, "For men who prefer something lighter, fresher, or more versatile, woody-aromatic, fresh-spicy, citrus-woody, leather, musky, and fougère fragrances offer excellent alternatives. These profiles can feel refined and distinctive without being too intense, making them suitable for a range of occasions, from daytime gatherings and outdoor events to more formal evening parties."
When selecting a fragrance for celebrations in India, it is important to take the climate and setting into account. "Warm temperatures and crowded indoor venues can amplify the impact of a perfume, so the ideal choice should offer richness and good performance without becoming overly heavy or oppressive. A balanced fragrance, with sufficient intensity to last throughout the evening, but enough freshness or transparency to remain comfortable can be particularly effective," adds Maxime.
For those who enjoy combining fragrances, Maxime recommends pairing complementary profiles rather than layering two very dominant scents. "For example, a fresh-spicy or citrus-woody fragrance can be softened and given greater depth with a subtle amber, musk, or woody layer. The key is moderation: the combination should feel harmonious and personal, leaving a lasting impression without overwhelming the people around you," he says.
One couldn't help but ask the perfumer about the correct way of wearing a scent when one’s stepping out to celebrate. "The best approach is to choose a fragrance that complements the occasion, the venue, and the weather. A scent that works beautifully for an outdoor celebration in warm temperatures may feel very different in a crowded indoor setting, so it is important to consider both the environment and the intensity of the fragrance. Richer, more concentrated scents are often well suited to evening events, while fresher or lighter compositions may be more comfortable for daytime occasions or warmer weather," says Maxime.
For optimal performance, fragrance should be applied to moisturised skin, ideally around 20 to 30 minutes before leaving. "This gives the scent time to settle and allows its different facets to develop naturally. The most effective pulse points include the neck, chest, inner wrists, and behind the ears. In most situations, three to five sprays are sufficient to create a noticeable yet elegant presence," he says.
It is also important to avoid rubbing the fragrance into the skin, as this can alter the way the composition develops. "Similarly, fragrance should be sprayed carefully around delicate Indian garments. If desired, one light spray can be applied to clothing from a suitable distance, provided the fabric is unlikely to be affected," he cautions.
Ultimately, wearing fragrance for a celebration is about balance. The goal is to create a refined and inviting impression, one that is memorable when people are close to you, but never overwhelming.
