The sun is always there. Even if you can’t see it, you should know it’s there. Staring at you. Spreading its light all over the world. Sending you warmth. And its UV rays. In abundance. Whether it’s cloudy or cold. Winter or summer. That’s what the sun is supposed to do. And you’re supposed to wear your sunscreen every single day. You’re doing that, right?
If you’ve been frequenting this website on a regular basis, you’d know that we’re big proponents of sunscreen. Almost obsessed. Like we should be. Everyone should, actually. Especially we live in a tropical nation where for 10 out 12 months the sun is busy roasting us with its heat, and even during the other two, it’s out aplenty. Don't get me wrong – I love sunlight as much as every other person, maybe a tad bit more. But loving the sunlight and walking into it without adequate preparation is a rookie mistake, and no one should be making it anymore. You’ve got to always have your armour on, without fail.
Here’s the golden rule: Always wear sunscreen. Every day. Day after day. No matter what season or weather. And reapply every few hours, especially if you’re out and about in the open.
It’s the one, most-effective thing you could do to ensure you’re avoiding premature ageing and giving yourself the gift of glowing skin. Besides avoiding sun burns and other such serious concerns, obviously. Yes, that humble sunscreen can do all that and so much more. So don’t give it a rest!
Things to keep in mind when choosing a sunscreen
How do you know you’re purchasing the right sunscreen for yourself? A few factors you must keep in mind:
Firstly, the sunscreen should provide broad-spectrum protection which means it’ll guard your skin against both UVA and UVB rays. The former causes ageing while the latter is responsible for burning the skin, in case you didn’t know.
Secondly, the sunscreen needs to be both water and sweat resistant. No point applying it, if it is going to be ruined the moment you start sweating, which you will, thanks to the sun.
Next up, ensure it’s at least SPF 30, since otherwise it’s going to be of not much use. And if you spend large parts of your day outdoors, SPF 50 is what you should be going for.
Lastly, your sunscreen has to be compatible with your skin type because you don’t want to use something that’s clogging your pores (for those with oily skin) or too light to be effective (for those with dry skin). Those with sensitive skin should only use sunscreens that are specifically designed for that skin type.
