Three months. Ninety-something days of texting, voice notes, the slow-burn banter that makes you grin at your phone on the Tube like a lunatic. Three months of "I can't wait to meet you" building up to one single afternoon in London that was supposed to feel like the opening scene of a rom-com.

I got off the bus at Green Park, spotted him across the street, and for about five glorious seconds I was the happiest woman in London. He was just as cute in real life.

Then my brain processed what I was actually looking at.

Training joggers. Trainers. A plain t-shirt. The full off-duty-athlete starter pack, except this wasn't a Sunday grocery run, this was date one.

By profession he was an athlete. A famous one. He'd just flown back from a tournament, probably running on airport food and jet lag. There were excuses available, and I tried on every single one of them in the ninety seconds it took him to cross the road. Maybe he's exhausted. Maybe this is just his comfort outfit. Maybe joggers are the new smart-casual and nobody told me.

None of them fit. The more I reached for a justification, the louder the real verdict got: this was the bare minimum, worn out loud. He sounded so good on paper, why would he wear this?

There's a very short list of things a first date requires. Show up. Be curious. Put your phone away. And — this one apparently needs saying — get dressed like you knew this was happening. First impressions most often are the last impressions.

So What Should You Definitely Not Wear On A First Date?

1. Gym Clothes (In Any Disguise)

This is the big one. Joggers, trainers, and a plain tee might feel harmless — comfortable, low-effort, "athletic guy" energy. But worn on a first date, it reads as exactly one thing: bare minimum to no effort

And it doesn't matter how clean the joggers are, how expensive the trainers, how "elevated" the brand. If it was built to be sweated in, it was not built for someone you've been building anticipation with for weeks. Save the gym fit for the gym.

2. Anything You Slept In

Baggy sweatpants, a stretched-out tee, socks with sandals . There's a difference between relaxed and unbothered, and she will clock which one you're serving within the first five seconds.

3.  The Try-Hard Suit (Unless the Date Actually Calls For It)

Overcorrecting is its own mistake. Rolling up in a full three-piece suit to a casual coffee date doesn't read as effort, it reads as mismatched energy,  Match the outfit to the occasion. A sharp shirt beats a stiff suit nine times out of ten.

4. Anything With a Loud Slogan or Cartoon Graphic

Save the novelty tee for game night with your mates. A first date is not the moment for a graphic that requires her to ask, "wait, what does that mean?" within the first minute of meeting you.

5. Wrinkled Anything

A great shirt, badly ironed, stops being a great shirt. Wrinkles are the fastest way to undo good taste. Five minutes with an iron is worth it if that means you get to have a second date.

6. Overpowering Cologne

This isn't clothing, but it belongs on the list because it does the same damage. A first date should make her want to lean in, not step back. Two sprays, not the whole bottle.

So What Should You Wear Instead?

The good news: the bar isn't high, it's just intentional. A clean shirt, linen, oxford, whatever suits the season, with just about any kind of trousers, and sneakers or loafers that have clearly seen a shoe brush, will beat almost any outfit you can overthink your way into. Casual is fine. Effortless is fine. What's not fine is the outfit that says "this wasn't a priority."

Because that's really what dressing well for a first date signals: not vanity, not extravagance  just proof that when it came time to see her, you actually thought about it.
