Oil pulling has gone from ancient wellness ritual to modern self-care staple. Rooted in traditional Ayurvedic practices, the simple routine for best dental care involve oil pulling- a swishing oil in the mouth for several minutes and your oral hygiene and overall wellness is well-taken care of.

Anything that claims to make self-care cool and wellness elevated involves preachy beauty influencers and wellness creators enthusiastically recommending it. Before knowing the benefits of oil pulling, let's understand that oil pulling is not an alternative to brushing your teeth and never will be.

What Is Oil Pulling?

Oil pulling is an oral hygiene practice that involves swishing edible oil, usually coconut, sesame, or sunflower oil in the mouth for 5 to 20 minutes. The oil is then spit out and followed by rinsing and brushing.

Originally from traditional Ayurvedic medicine in India, oil pulling is believed to remove toxins, or "ama," from the body. While in the early 2000s, toothpastes were considered the most beneficial for maintaining daily dental hygiene, today dental care consists of several DIY steps to help maintain a pearly white smile. One of them-coconut oil pulling is especially popular due to coconut oil's antimicrobial properties and pleasant taste in the West.

This rise in popularity is despite American Dental Association's insufficient scientific evidence to recommend oil pulling as a standard dental practice. Though, not considered harmful and generally considered safe when done occasionally and correctly, oil pulling in Ayurveda is said to have several benefits. However, experts also warn that relying solely on oil pulling instead of proper oral care could lead to untreated dental problems.

What Are The Benefits of Oil Pulling?

While studies on oil pulling remain limited, some early research suggests there may be mild oral health benefits. In a review published by the British Dental Journal, oil pulling is found to be potentially as effective as chlorhexidine mouthwash in reducing plaque and improving oral hygiene.

However, researchers also emphasised that the evidence is currently weak due to small sample sizes and inconsistent study quality.

They do though agree that it may help reduce bacteria in the mouth but cure tooth decay, replace brushing or flossing, detoxify the body and strengthening of teeth permanently hold almost no reliable evidence.

Should You Do Oil Pulling?

Oil pulling can be a relaxing addition to a wellness routine, especially for people interested in natural self-care practices. Some users report fresher breath and a cleaner feeling mouth after regular use.

Again, it should be viewed as a supplement and not replacement for brushing your teeth twice daily, flossing, limiting sugar and caffeine intake and regular visit to the dentist to maintain oral health in the most effective ways.

How to Practice Oil Pulling Safely

If you want to try oil pulling, follow these basic steps:

  1. Take one tablespoon of coconut, sesame, or sunflower oil

  2. Swish gently around the mouth for 10–15 minutes

  3. Avoid swallowing the oil

  4. Spit it into a trash bin rather than the sink

  5. Rinse thoroughly and brush your teeth afterward

Consistency matters more than duration, and experts recommend stopping if discomfort occurs.
