The International Whisky Competition (IWC) evaluates whisky without any knowledge of brand, origin, category or strength, scoring each entry across fifteen criteria out of one hundred. The competition ranks a top fifteen rather than handing out medals by category, which is precisely why a win here counts for more than most industry trophies. No single malt from Scotland made that list at all this year. Kavalan alone placed eight times, and its Head of R&D, Zerose Yang, was named Master Distiller of the Year.

How Kavalan Peatist Oloroso Sherry Cask Single Malt Whisky Is Made

Kavalan built its reputation on tropical sweetness, mango, pineapple, a buttery richness that comes from ageing fast in Yilan County's punishing heat and humidity. The Peatist series asks what happens when smoke enters that profile without erasing it. This particular bottl sepent its entire maturation in Oloroso sherry casks rather than finishing briefly at the end, which explains its deep mahogany colour and the dried-fruit weight underneath the peat. Bottled from a single cask at 57.1% ABV, non-chill filtered and un-tinted, it's a bolder, more serious dram than Kavalan's entry-level releases.
