Thought you would live to watch SOTY 3? Nope, that might not exactly be happening, because after Student of the Year 2, we are getting a new OTT spin-off. Say hello to Student of the Year: After Dark.

Student of the Year: After Dark is a web series that rebuilds Karan Johar’s campus franchise as a thriller, will stream on JioHotstar from November 13, 2026. Johar announced it on October 19, the day the original film turned 14, alongside a teaser that introduces Shanaya Kapoor as the lead in her OTT debut.

From what Johar has revealed till now, the thriller will be built around a competition, focussing more on violence, mystery and rivalry in place of the glossy campus world of the earlier films. Reportedly, the show is envisioned as a mix of Class and Euphoria.

Shanaya Kapoor makes her OTT debut in the series. Reports dating back to 2025 say she plays a double role, but that is still unconfirmed. For context, the 2012 film introduced Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra, and Student of the Year 2 (2019), directed by Punit Malhotra, starred Tiger Shroff, with Ananya Panday and Tara Sutaria making their film debuts.

Reema Sengupta is the director. Her short film Counterfeit Kunkoo premiered at Sundance in 2018, and Nocturnal Burger, which unfolds over a night at a Mumbai police station, premiered there in 2023. When Johar named her as the director at a Chandigarh film festival in March 2024, he said he wanted the series to carry her voice and follow her approach. Dharmatic Entertainment, the digital arm of Dharma Productions, produces it.

The series premieres exclusively on JioHotstar on November 13, 2026. It is a web series with no theatrical release, and a teaser accompanied the announcement. A full trailer has not been revelaed yet. Neither the episode count nor the runtime has been announced as of now.

The road here took more than three years. Reports in July 2023 first tied Kapoor to a Student of the Year series then expected on Disney+ Hotstar, Johar named Maya as director in March 2024, and a September 2026 report for described a darker tone before the official announcement on October 19.
