After four seasons of treasure hunts, doomed romances and terrible decisions, Netflix's teen adventure drama heads into its last ten episodes with the Pogues more broken than they've ever been. Creators Jonas Pate, Josh Pate and Shannon Burke have said this ending was mapped out from the start, so expect the finale to do justice to the story.

Wait, How Did Outer Banks Season 4 End?

To understand where Season 5 begins, it helps to revisit Season 4's ending. The back half of the season sent the Pogues to Morocco chasing the Blue Crown, and the hunt cost them more than they bargained for. Pope shot a man named Lightner (Rigo Sanchez) to save Cleo's life and has been carrying the guilt of it since. Sarah discovered she was pregnant in the middle of everything else going on with the treasure hunt. And in the season's most devastating turn, Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane) killed his own son, JJ (Rudy Pankow), in front of Kiara (Madison Bailey), before making off with the Blue Crown himself. The group left Morocco without the treasure, without JJ and without much of the bond that had carried them through four seasons of danger.

Season 5 opens with the fallout of this disaster. The Pogues at their lowest point: stranded far from home, mourning JJ, the Blue Crown gone, and threats closing in from every side. Groff is still at large, Dalia (Pollyanna McIntosh) and the Corsairs are closing in, and the Kooks are working to make sure the group has no home left to return to on Kildare. Kiara is still reeling from JJ's death, and a preganant Sarah is on the run with the rest of the group.

The core Pogues are all back for the final season: John B (Chase Stokes), Sarah Cameron (Madelyn Cline), Kiara (Madison Bailey), Pope (Jonathan Daviss), Cleo (Carlacia Grant), Rafe (Drew Starkey), Sofia (Fiona Palomo) and Topper (Austin North). Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane) and Deputy Shoupe (Cullen Moss) have both been bumped up to series regulars, a sign of how central their roles become this season. Rudy Pankow won't return in a regular capacity given JJ's death, though flashback appearance are possible.
