There's a particular kind of quiet that settles over you after watching a good war drama. Not the noise of the battle scenes, but the silence right after when you're sitting there thinking about the people whose stories inspired it.

If you haven't seen it yet, here's the short version: the show is built around the Golden Arrows squadron of the Indian Air Force and dramatizes the real 1999 air campaign that shares its name  the operation that turned the tide of the Kargil War. It follows a flight commander training his squadron just as tensions with Pakistan boil over, and it doesn't shy away from the human cost behind the headlines and the medals.

If Operation Safed Sagar left you wanting more stories like it, real courage, real stakes, real people under impossible pressure; here are seven war dramas worth adding to your list.

 1. Shershaah (2021)

This one might hit hardest if you're already emotionally invested in Kargil-era stories. Shershaah tells the story of Captain Vikram Batra, one of the most decorated soldiers of the Kargil War, from his early army days through the battles that earned him the Param Vir Chakra. It's less about strategy and more about character his humor, his bond with his men, and the relationship he left behind.

2. LOC Kargil (2003)

LOC Kargil is a sprawling, ensemble war epic that reconstructs the infantry battles fought to reclaim the peaks , the same peaks that Golden Arrows squadron would have been flying support for. It's a long watch by design, aiming for scale and authenticity over pace, and it features an enormous cast of Bollywood actors playing real soldiers.

3. Uri: The Surgical Strike (2019)

A covert military operation built from careful planning, tight execution, and personal sacrifice. Uri dramatizes the 2016 surgical strikes carried out in response to an attack on an army base in Uri, and it does a good job balancing tactical detail with the emotional toll on the soldiers involved. If you liked the mission-planning tension in Safed Sagar, you would love this.

4. Lakshya (2004)

Lakshya follows an aimless young man who joins the army almost by accident and finds real purpose only when he's thrown into the Kargil War as an officer. The film builds toward a mountain assault sequence that's considered one of Hindi cinema's most gripping depictions of high-altitude combat, a nice thematic echo of the terrain Safed Sagar is fought over.

5. The Ghazi Attack (2017)

This submarine thriller is based on the mysterious sinking of a Pakistani submarine during the 1971 India-Pakistan war. It trades mountain peaks for the claustrophobia of underwater warfare, but the core appeal is the same: a small crew, an enormous amount at stake, and no room for mistakes.

6. 1971 (2007)

A quieter, more introspective entry. 1971 follows a group of Indian prisoners of war attempting to escape captivity in Pakistan years after the war that put them there has ended. It's less about combat and more about endurance, hope, and what soldiers carry with them long after the fighting stops, a good companion piece if you want to sit with the aftermath rather than the action.

7. Sam Bahadur (2023)

This biopic of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw is worth your time. It traces his path from a young officer to the man who led India through the 1971 war, and it's as much about leadership and institution-building as it is about battle. A useful reminder that the officers planning operations like Safed Sagar were shaped by decades of military tradition before them.
