Scarpetta starring Nicole Kidman in the lead, is the kind of twist-heavy thriller that leaves your head spinning. So, it is no surprise you are here looking for answers to what exactly happened at the end of Season 1 (Episode 8, Part Two).

Before we dive into full decoder mode, a fair warning for you: Major spoilers ahead. If you're not caught up, now's your chance to turn back-no complaints later.

The Prime Video series that dropped this March is based on the bestselling forensic thriller novels by Patricia Cornwell and brings her iconic protagonist Dr. Kay Scarpetta, a medical examiner, who finds her debut case resurface 28 years into her career. Marrying family drama with crime thriller (and a hell of dead and naked female bodies) that point to things left unrequited and secrets not concealed well almost desperately makes Dr. Scarpetta want to solve the latest gory murders and the others cases she is dragged into.

Certainly, you can bet on the methodical forensic scientist to solve each and every cases because she is literally that smart. But life is complicated, even for the most intelligent and disciplined chief medical examiners like Dr. Kay who struggles to work things out with her family as her work buddy Marino who is married to her sister Dorothy- a children's book writer- has to make a choice between working with her on the case and choosing his jealous wife who suspects he has always been in love with Dr. Kay and not her. But that isn't all for Dr. Kay. Her relationship with her husband strains and a hands on grieving niece get worse and break by end of the season.

Wait, there's more that crumbles her spirits, she is fired from her job because she is hell bent on digging dirt up on someone from the office in relation to a murder case that "solved". So, by end of the season Dorothy (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Marino have left the house, so has her husband who wants a divorce and her niece who is mad at her for deleting the AI program (and Janet) without her consent.

The 8-part series builds tense and suspense around the characters in the show to create an atmospheric storytelling that almost invites the viewers to point at the suspect and solve the case. Until, out of nowhere in the middle of the familial meltdown in the Scarpetta house, Kidman's character finds herself alone in the big house and the murderer and a cliffhanger.

Who Is The Killer In Season 1 Scarpetta?

Dorothy and Marino are the last ones to abandon Dr. Kay in her Virginia house—making the perfect plot for the killer to close in on her and finally reveal himself. It turns out, it is Officer August Ryan, a copycat murderer replicating the murders that took place 28 years.

Although, many might find the self-reveal an abrupt way to end the show, it ties the past and present well together. Turns out the copycat killer is the nephew of the serial killer from the past— Roy McCorkle, who is an seemingly unremarkable 911 operator but hunts down women based on their voices. Creepy!

In the present, Officer Ryan's connection to the original case makes the situation even more disturbing he was not only the first responding officer for the murders back in the days but also was traumatised by his uncle as he witnessed one of the murders as a child and, rather than being horrified, became obsessed wanted to perfect them.

Like in the past, Dr. Kay tried to defend herself against the murderer and ends up killing him only to find someone walk in on her during a brutal use of her baseball bat as the weapon of self-defence. Pretty gory, yes!

And's the cliffhanger no one can get over.

Who Walks In On Dr. Kay At The End Of Episode 8?

I mean, the showrunners have not revealed who it is that walks in on Dr. Kay Sacrpetta after she smashes the head of the copycat murderer into a pulp at the end of Season 1. However, if we are to take lesson from her past and learn something- it is that history repeats itself. In the past, it was Pete Marino who comes to her rescue, so fans of the show can anticipate that it is in fact, him once again coming to her rescue.

Or, is it Lucy stumbling back to her aunt, Benton realising he doesn't want a divorce or Fruge looking for her partner, Officer Ryan's whereabouts or someone who'd like to frame the forensic examiner in a crime.

With another season confirmed of the show though no official dates of Scarpetta Season 2 announced yet, one can wait for the reveal to happen.
