Streaming platforms aplenty, yet no idea what to watch!

Isn’t that one of the biggest ironies of our modern times? Even as new streaming platforms (and the movies & shows they’re making) continue to pop up by the hour, more and more people are spending their evenings not being able to decide what to watch, or rewatching their favourite movies and shows for the nth time.

Because who knows what’s worth watching out of the many new titles that’ve realised, right?

Sardar Udham

Based on the life of revolutionary Udham Singh, this Shoojit Sircar movie won the National Film Award, along with earning Vicky Kaushal multiple laurels for his fine portrayal in the titular character. The depiction of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, in particular, stood out for most.

Tumbbad

Period films have been quite popular in cinema off late, as have horror films. Tumbbad combined both genres to great effect, and made its lead actor, Sohum Shah, an overnight star. It remains one of the most loved movies of this genre, and you’ll always encounter fans who’ll argue it’s still quite underrated.

Kumbalangi Nights

There’s nothing Fahadh Faasil can’t do. Even if it means playing an eccentric grey character who causes enough and more chaos in the lives of four friends in a tiny village in Kerala. Faasil is an absolute joy to watch, as is the rest of the cast, in this fabulous coming-of-age film that’s too good to be missed.

Drishyam 2

Whether it’s the Malayalam original or its Hindi remake, whichever version of Drishyam 2 you watch, it’s bound to blow your mind. Especially that ending that’s simply brilliant, to put it mildly. One of the better movie franchises currently around, Drishyam is only getting better with each film, and we can’t wait to see what the third film (that’s currently being worked on) brings.

Jallikattu

When a bull escapes a slaughterhouse, the villagers get together to hunt it down. While the plot of the movie sounds a bit simplistic, the action on screen is anything but that. A well-made thriller that impressed anyone who saw it, Jallikattu is perfect for when you’re looking for an adrenaline-pumping watch.

Saani Kaayidham

A woman’s fight for revenge and justice has rarely been this powerful. Leading from the front with her incredible performance is Keerthy Suresh in this crime drama, who holds the movie together, and even deters it from straying into something that’s too generic.

Shershaah

Based on the life of Indian Army Captain Vikram Batra (played by Sidharth Malhotra), Shershaah isn’t just a war drama but a truly rousing movie that redefines what it means to be truly brave. Also starring Kiara Advani, the film was unanimously loved and appreciated upon its release and remains a fan favourite since.

Ayyappanum Koshiyum

Malayalam films are usually one of the finest every year, and this Prithviraj-starrer is no different. This one focusing on the tension between an upright police officer and the retired army havaldar who moves into his village is a masterclass in both performances and screenplay.

Mahaan

A middle-aged man’s rise from school teacher to a liquor baron, Mahaan features an exceptional Vikram in the titular role, along with his soon, Dhruv Vikram. While the plotline may be quite like other films of this genre, what makes Mahaan stand-out are the screenplay and performances.
