Some Fridays ask you to choose a mood. This one asks you to choose a country, a decade and possibly a box of tissues. The new Friday OTT releases on Netflix on November 6 run from an acclaimed Korean filmmaker’s return to a Colombian historical drama, with Possible Love, Under Siege, the Japanese romance One Year To Live, Buy A Man, the holiday feature A Dog’s Perfect Christmas and the family drama Dilwali Diwali rounding out the list. Here are the five picks and what to expect from each, whether you’re settling in alone or hosting a houseful.
Lee Chang-dong has never been a director in a hurry, and this comes after an eight-year pause. Two married couples sit at its centre: a laid-off worker and his wife, and a documentary filmmaker with her husband. A film project draws them into the same orbit, and what surfaces is less plot than temperament, the quiet distance between what people want and what they will admit to. It is a slow, attentive watch that rewards patience and a dark room.
The date matters here. On November 6, 1985, M-19 guerrillas stormed Colombia’s Palace of Justice and held more than 300 people, Supreme Court justices among them. This eight-part limited series arrives on the anniversary itself. It retraces the assault, the army’s retaking of the building the next day and the decades-long legal fight by victims’ families. It is heavy, historical and best suited to viewers who like to binge with purpose.
This Japanese romantic drama, adapted from a popular webcomic, begins with the sentence nobody wants to hear: one year left. Rather than let her savings sit idle, a young woman pays a struggling aspiring actor for his time and company. The deal starts out purely transactional, then the lines between work, companionship and affection begin to blur, with the reason they met hanging over every scene. Keep tissues within reach.
Already streaming since November 4, this holiday feature is adapted from a W. Bruce Cameron novel and stars Dennis Quaid. A family that is already fraying heads into Christmas, and old tensions threaten to swallow the season whole. Then a stray puppy turns up and hands everyone a shared responsibility at the moment they are least equipped to share anything. The idea of mending a family by giving it something outside itself to love is familiar, but it is cosy by design and easy company for a weekend afternoon.
Going home for Diwali is simple until everyone who knew an earlier version of you is waiting inside. Mihir Ahuja plays a young man caught between his own choices and what the older generation expects of him, in a family drama directed by Ritesh Menon and produced by Terribly Tiny Tales. Manoj Pahwa and Neelu Kohli co-star. The festival is no mere backdrop here. It is the occasion that squeezes relatives with clashing expectations into one room and lets the awkward conversations begin.
