Gird your loins, people!

A new teaser for The Devil Wears Prada 2 has been released, offering us another glimpse of the iconic characters’ return almost twenty years after the original cult classic debut.

Breaking Down The Teaser

The teaser opens not in the glossy halls of Runway, but at Andy Sachs’ front door. Miranda Priestly (Streep) stands outside in a beautiful platinum bob, unbothered that it’s probably 6am.

She looks at Andy and says, "Pull yourself together. We have work to do. And by we, I mean you."

Priestley now has a new rival, Emily Charlton, a powerful executive at a luxury conglomerate who could be of great use for Runway's survival.

The sharp humour continues when Miranda notices Andy’s outfit and delivers another pointed remark – “I hope that’s not what you’re wearing tonight.” Ah, dead.

The new trailer also gives us a glimpse of Bridgerton star Simone Ashley's character. In this scene, Meryl Streep’s Miranda is in full, scathing form while reviewing the latest photos for Runway, asking Andy whether “the models were encouraged to mill around like starving goats in the parking lot of a methadone clinic in New Jersey.”

As she delivers the line, Ashley’s character interrupts with a pointed throat-clear to get Miranda’s attention.

“What? What am I not allowed to say? Methadone? New Jersey?” Miranda quips in response.

The Plot

The sequel follows Miranda Priestly's struggle against Emily Charlton — her former assistant, now a rival executive — as they fight over advertising revenue amidst the decline of print media, all while Miranda navigates the possibility of retirement. Andy returns as the new Features Editor at Runway, dropped back into the chaos she escaped two decades ago, positioned between the world that shaped her and the media ecosystem she's built her career in since.

Emily Blunt's Emily controls the advertising money Runway desperately needs. Miranda, for the first time, has to ask for something – and we can’t wait for the drama!

The Cast

Streep, Hathaway, Blunt, and Tucci are all back. Tracie Thoms returns as Lily, Tibor Feldman as Irv. New additions include Kenneth Branagh as Miranda's boyfriend, Simone Ashley in a mystery role, and Lucy Liu, Justin Theroux, B.J. Novak, and Pauline Chalamet filling out the ensemble. Patrick Brammall plays Andy's love interest. Lady Gaga also has a cameo in the movie. Anna Wintour, Naomi Campbell, and Donatella Versace — who was actually spotted filming on set in October — are all reportedly appearing. This one will be big!

But, Will It Hold Up?

This is the question worth sitting with. Legacy sequels have a grim track record — Zoolander 2 arrived nine years after the original and managed the rare feat of making audiences like it more than the first one. Anchorman 2 drowned in its own self-awareness, and Sex and the City 2 is still a crime scene.

The original Devil Wears Prada worked because it was a film about ambition, compromise, and what you lose when you become someone you don't recognise. The risk with the sequel is that the premise becomes a nostalgia delivery mechanism rather than an actual story.

But there are good signs. For starters, it’s the same director and the same writer back in their seats. And also, it looks like the plot is built on genuine dramatic stakes and not just a “they’re back!” story.

The full trailer was viewed over 220 million times in its first 24 hours, making it the most-watched trailer in 20th Century Studios' history. The appetite is real, and the studio knows it.

Whether the film earns that appetite — well, that's what May 1st is for.
