We’re already talking about movies releasing in December? Wow. Talk about time flying fast!

Fortunately, the month ahead promises to be quite a banger at the box office. From sequels to originals, big-scale action adventures to intimate dramas, animation to superhero stories, it’s all happening at a theatre near you in the last month of 2024.

Since the year hasn’t been particularly great for movies, with major releases tanking at the ticket window one Friday after another, the film industry would definitely want at least one major pan-India blockbuster in its kitty. Will it happen though? Well… we’ll soon find out. What we can be sure about is that the movies releasing in December definitely have the makings of a massive success.

New Movies Releasing in December 2024:

Pushpa 2: The Rule

One of the most highly anticipated movies of the year, Pushpa 2: The Rule is finally hitting theatres this month, three years after the release of the first part. Allu Arjun is back in the titular role and judging by the trailer, the sequel is bigger, louder and much more dramatic. While the movie’s box-office outcome is fairly certain - hello, blockbuster! - what’s left to be seen is if it manages to impress those who weren’t a fan of the first one.

Baby John

Varun Dhawan’s the latest star from tinsel town to go ‘mass’ by joining hands with a filmmaker from down south. Produced by Atlee, Baby John promises to showcase Dhawan like never before and the teaser of the film has certainly left the star’s fans and critics equally impressed. Will it be the game changer that Dhawan and Co would want it to be? We’ll find out soon enough!

Mufasa: The Lion King

The prequel to 2019’s The Lion King, Mufasa: The Lion King is somewhat of an origin story, narrating the life story of Mufasa, from an abandoned orphan to the king of the pride lands. Aaron Pierre voices the part of Mufasa in the movie that also brings back Beyonce as Nala. Interestingly, Blue Ivy Carter makes her feature film debut with this one, voicing Kiara, Mufasa and Sarabi’s granddaughter.

Babygirl

Nicole Kidman starring in an erotic thriller might or might not have been on your bingo card for the year but this is one movie that’s made enough and more noise all through 2024. As Kidman embarks on a sexually-charged affair with her much-younger colleague at work, the film looks at both women’s relationships with their bodies and sexuality as well as workplace hierarchy and dynamics between the two genders.

Heretic

Nothing like a good psychological horror movie, right? After winning laurels at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this year, Hugh Grant-starrer Heretic is making its way to the big screen this month. The movie is about two young missionaries who get caught in the mind games of a reclusive old man, while they’re trying to convert him to Christianity, so you can expect both religion and thrills to make for a potent plot.

Kraven The Hunter

From the seemingly endless roster of Marvel superheroes, comes another one, this time played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Kraven The Hunter, is, well, a hunter with some kind of daddy issues which lead him to becoming a superhero, one who is both feared and revered. Russell Crowe plays the said father so the movie should have some gravitas behind all that action.

Viduthalai Part 2

The second part of Vijay Setupathi’s period crime thriller, Viduthalai Part 2 is also making its way to the big screen this month. Since the first part won major laurels from audiences and critics alike, expectations will obviously be high from the team to give a fitting closure to Vaathiyaar’s tale of crime, which has been adapted from the short story, Thunaivan.
