India will kick off their Asian Games 2026 campaign against Afghanistan in the second quarter-final on Monday. The IND vs AFG game will be played at the Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin from 10:30 a.m. IST onwards. Expectations are high for India, with the women's team having already clinched gold and adding to the buzz around the men's campaign. Firm favourites for the gold medal, India have named a full-strength squad this time - featuring skipper Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh, among others.

Afghanistan, who were recently whitewashed in Delhi, have arrived in Japan with an inexperienced squad led by Darwish Rasooli, featuring as many as six uncapped players. India qualified directly for the quarter-finals as one of the four highest-ranked Asian teams as of the cut-off date. Afghanistan missed out on a direct quarter-final berth by just one rank and had to go through the group stage to reach the knockouts. They beat Japan in the tournament opener before losing to Nepal in their second game.

Relentless rain in Nagoya has thrown India's knockout preparations off track over the last two days, but captain Shreyas Iyer has made it clear there will be no excuses when they take on Afghanistan.

"We cannot cite the reason of rain because we are a bunch of professionals. Such hurdles keep coming and mentally we have to be prepared irrespective of what the situation is going to be,” Iyer was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.

“We got decent time for knocking and warm-up and we got some practice. Tomorrow we will try to adapt to the wicket quickly and see how the weather is. That is secondary. The primary thing is to come and play the match.” he said.
