'Tis the season of concerts and we can’t keep calm!

Joining the ever-increasing list of international music stars flying down to India are Adam Levine and Co, as Maroon 5 took to the stage recently for their maiden concert in Mumbai, making the audience dance to their beats with Moves Like Jagger and Girls Like You, among their other hits.

While we’re on the subject of international boy bands, it might be a good time to talk about the other ones that have given us incredible music over the years. Some of them are from the past, some absolutely in the present; all of these bands are definitely one for the ages!

Here are some of our favourite boy bands and what makes them iconic:

Backstreet Boys

Sometimes we wish we could ‘turn back time’ just so that we could be back in the '90s, watching Backstreet Boys on our screens. When they crooned Quit Playing Games or I Want It That Way, literally 'Everybody' became a fan!

The more than three-decade old band continues to churn out new music and their performance in India last year was a testament to the fact that when they sing As Long as You Love Me, we can’t help but respond with, Always and Forever!

Boyzone

It was near impossible to find any teenage girl – and some boys - who did not have a Boyzone poster on their wall when the Irish five-member boy band was raging in the '90s. No boy dared to miss out on Love Me For A Reason, No Matter What, Baby Can I Hold You Tonight or I Love The Way You Love Me when they were making a mixtape for their girl.

Although they disbanded in 2019 after 25 years of memorable music, Boyzone continues to remain special for all their fans, for all the right reasons.

One Direction

Think of One Direction and the words 'fan hysteria' come to mind. The Irish pop boy band, commonly known as 1D, were teen idols and consisted of five members, who went their separate ways in 2016 to pursue individual careers, but not before giving us all a cracker of a musical career.

From the soul-stirring What Makes You Beautiful to the earworm Midnight Memories to the banger Where Do Broken Hearts Go, One Direction knew exactly which direction our hearts lie!

BTS

Even if you have never heard a single song of theirs – unless you have been living under the biggest rock – it is next to impossible that you have not been touched by the phenomenon called BTS. Arguably even bigger than Beatlemania, the all-Korean boy band’s fandom, known as the BTS Army, has contributed immensely in making BTS one of the biggest boy bands in the history of music.

At the peak of their career, the seven-member gang declared a hiatus in 2023 to pursue their mandatory South Korean military service but they promise to be back next year.

Jonas Brothers

Nick Jonas might be ‘national jiju’ for many of us here in India, but the American singer was already famous for the boy band - or should we say brother-band? The three siblings Nick, Joe and Kevin formed Jonas Brothers in 2005. Their cover-boy looks and catchy tunes ensured that they attained popularity real soon.

The Grammy Award-nominated trio split in the middle for a couple of years but reunited with the chartbusting ‘Sucker’ in 2019 and then delivered one of the most definitive albums of their career with ‘The Album’ last year.
