Half a billion dollars would make most studios throw a party. For GTA 6, it barely qualifies as a warm-up. Sensor Tower estimates GTA 6 has pulled in $429 million from 4.38 million pre-orders, three months before the game even ships. On paper, that's a staggering number, but then, this is not any other game you are talkig about. This is GTA 6! (You can try and say it like King Leonidas said, "This is Sparta", in the film 300). Next to the hype machine Rockstar has built around the launch, this $429 million GTA 6 amount has generated almost reads modest. Almost.
PlayStation is doing the heavy lifting here, accounting for 77% of GTA 6 pre-orders and roughly $331 million of the total, likely thanks to Rockstar's marketing tie-up with Sony.
Xbox trails behind with 1 million copies and about $98 million. Split it further, and 89% of buyers went straight for the Ultimate Edition over the $80 Standard version, which says plenty about how little price resistance exists when Rockstar's name is on the box.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick called the GTA 6 pre-order numbers "astronomical" and "unprecedented" on an August 7 investor call.
There’s one catch in this story. Sensor Tower's estimate is just a snapshot, not the finish line. The GTA 6 Extended Look already dropped on Netflix on August 27, giving millions their first real look at gameplay, and Rockstar didn't stop there.
The studio also announced Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album, a 34-track exclusive dropping alongside the game on November 19, 2026.
Between the showcase, the soundtrack news, and the map leaks still doing the rounds despite Rockstar's best takedown efforts, this $429 million figure is starting to look less like a ceiling and more like a starting point, with launch day still very much on the horizon.
