The itsy-bitsy ultra-high hem shorts are everywhere this season - from Spring Summer 27 runways to pop concerts. The recently concluded New York Fashion Week saw Brooks Brothers, Conner Ives, Willy Chavarria and Public School proposing super cropped tailored shorts. Though the wave was already sent into motion months ago by Jonathan Anderson at Dior who sent out an array of edited pairs offset with long line coats and blazers. Pharell Williams at Louis Vuitton too featured several micro shorts. Perhaps a reflection of Pharell's own closet. Also, worth mentioning is Zegna's Spring Summer 27 collection by Alessandro Sartori which offered an array of shorts crafted in luxurious textiles and soft hues ideal for sun-soaked vacations.
Recently, Adults (2025) actor Jack Innanen was spotted in a tiny pair as he went for a jog. Brothers Zac and Dylan Efron posted a thirst trap snapshot sunning on a boat sporting micro swim shorts. Love Story (2026) actor Paul Anthony Kelly too documented his beach holiday memory of soaking the sun in a tiny pair on his feed. Most of Harry Styles' recent tour looks have been centred around a pair of teeny tiny shorts often styled with tailored separates. Trust Harry to make a pair of innocuous shorts look like a high fashion editorial. Moreover, global pop stars like Maluma have proved that sporty shorts can be styled and upgraded with formal separates and accessories. Our very own Tiger Shroff, Adytya Raj and Ahaan Shetty have sported short shorts during their workouts and holidays. Even homegrown brands like Shivan & Narresh, XYXX and Jack & Jones have done short shorts in their own handwriting.
The Shards (2026) by Ryan Murphy set in the eighties also brought back the focus on retro-length shorts for men with the show's cast including Graham Campbell and Homer Gere flashing their legs. Moreover, with the maximalist decade trending on Instagram of late, it won't be a surprise to see another short shorts renaissance ushering in.
Sara Fanning, Creative Head - Fashion and Lifestyle at AZORTE notes that the comeback of short shorts is part of a larger evolution in menswear towards more expressive silhouettes and a less prescriptive approach to dressing. "Fashion is increasingly about personal style rather than adhering to traditional ideas of what menswear should look like, and shorter hemlines are a natural extension of that evolution. The influence of sport, athleisure, and the growing interest in relaxed dressing have also helped bring this silhouette into the mainstream," she says.
She sees the trend gravitating towards greater experimentation with proportion, fabric, and styling. "Rather than one definitive length or fit, we will see a mix of relaxed, tailored, and performance-led silhouettes. The focus will be on creating a balanced look that feels intentional, while allowing for more freedom and individuality in everyday dressing!"
Harshad Panchal, Lead Designer, XYXX suggests that the key to styling short shorts is to balance the proportions with the rest of the outfit. "A relaxed pair can be paired with an oversized shirt or a fitted polo for an effortless everyday look, while tailored short shorts work well with a structured shirt or a lightweight blazer for a more elevated take. The contrast between a shorter hem and a more structured top is what makes the look feel intentional. For a sportier approach, pair them with a relaxed tee, running shoes, and performance socks. For a more fashion-forward look, experiment with longer layers on top, such as an open shirt or a lightweight jacket, to create contrast with the shorter hemline," he quips.
Stylist Vikram Seth recommends balancing the abbreviated silhouette with elevated separates, an oversized blazer, crisp shirt or fine knit. "Keep the styling clean and the footwear refined. The shorter the shorts, the sharper the overall look," he adds.
