€125. That was the entire plan!
Or it would have been, if Florian Hurel had bothered with one. The Frenchman landed in India with pocket change, a diploma in advanced hairdressing, and just simple conviction.
France had handed him the technical grammar — the cuts, the colour theory, the discipline. And in India is where he applied it all. The better part of two decades on, that gamble reads like a map: a salon network running from Mumbai's Walkeshwar to Bandra, out to Ahmedabad and Pune's Koregaon Park; a Schwarzkopf ambassadorship; and FHair, his own "100% made in India" label.
In a business running on twelve-second tutorials and miracle serums, Hurel is still insisting that mastery is just consistency repeated until it looks like talent. "Luxury today is intelligence combined with experience," he says.
In a conversation with Florian, we learn about his journey, styling tips, and the essential product ever man needs to have on his shelf in India.
You landed in India with €125 and, depending on who's telling it, either a plan or sheer nerve. How has the journey been?
A bit of both, honestly. I came to India with very little money but a lot of curiosity and determination. I didn't have a master plan; I had a belief that if I worked hard and stayed open to learning, opportunities would come. The journey has been incredible. India challenged me, taught me resilience, and ultimately became home. Looking back, every struggle was worth it because it helped shape the person and entrepreneur I am today.
France gave you the technical grammar of hair. What did you have to unlearn the moment you started working with Indian hair, Indian humidity, Indian clients?
Everything I learned in France gave me a strong foundation, but India taught me adaptability. Indian hair has different textures, density, and concerns. Humidity changes everything. I had to stop assuming one solution fits all and start listening more closely to what clients actually needed. Indian clients are also very knowledgeable and emotionally connected to their hair, so personalization became even more important.
FHair is built on "100% made in India." Tell me more about the product.
FHair was created because we wanted professional-quality products developed specifically for Indian hair and Indian conditions. Every formula is researched, developed, and manufactured in India. We combine international expertise with local understanding. The goal was never just to create products; it was to create solutions that genuinely work for the realities of Indian hair, climate, and lifestyle.
You train young stylists constantly. Be honest about the talent coming up — what's the one habit you keep having to beat out of them?
Wanting quick results. Social media has created a culture where everyone wants to become an expert overnight. Hairdressing is a craft. It takes patience, repetition, and attention to detail. I constantly remind young stylists that mastery comes from consistency, not shortcuts.
What's the most expensive mistake you've made building all this — money or otherwise — and would you make it again?
Trusting the wrong people at times. In business, that's often more expensive than any financial mistake. But every setback taught me something valuable about leadership, partnerships, and building strong systems. So while I wouldn't intentionally repeat those mistakes, I don't regret the lessons they gave me.
The Indian luxury-beauty client in 2026 versus the one you met when you arrived: what's the biggest shift?
Today's client is far more informed. Earlier, luxury was about the brand name and experience. Now it's about results, transparency, expertise, and personalization. Clients want to know what's in a product, why a treatment works, and how it fits their lifestyle. Luxury today is intelligence combined with experience.
What's a piece of advice you always go back to?
Never stop learning. The moment you think you know everything, you stop growing. Whether it's hair, business, or life, curiosity keeps you relevant.
Onto grooming! The single most common mistake Indian men make with their hair?
Using the wrong products and over-washing. Many men treat every hair type the same. Hair care should be personalized just like skincare. Understanding your scalp and hair type makes a huge difference.
Thinning hair is the great male anxiety. What genuinely helps, and what's expensive snake oil?
What genuinely helps is early intervention, a healthy scalp, proper diagnosis, and consistency. No miracle product suddenly regrows a full head of hair overnight. Be cautious of anything promising instant results. Hair health is a long-term commitment, not a quick fix.
How many products does a man actually need on his shelf?
Three to four is enough. A good shampoo, a conditioner, a styling product suited to your hair type, and if needed, a scalp treatment. Simplicity works when the products are right.
One grooming splurge worth every rupee, and one that's a total waste?
Worth every rupee: a consultation with a skilled professional who can guide you correctly. Good advice saves you time, money, and frustration. A waste: buying expensive products because they're trending without understanding whether they're right for your hair. The most expensive product isn't always the best product for you.
