Singles In Town, Finland Is Calling You For Free Blind Date Dinner

Visit Finland, the national tourism board, is offering 16 single people from around the world precisely that. Here's how to apply before November 10

Being single has its difficulties, especially in social situations. Whenever you turn up at a party alone, you become Chandler Bing, gripping a drink you don't want, laughing out of courtesy and deploying a quip as a defence mechanism before anyone has attacked. The apps are no kinder. Forty recycled faces, a conversation that dies at "so what do you do?" and constant "we miss you" notification from the auto-generated messages.

Visit Finland, the national tourism board, appears to have noticed the qualms of singles across the world. And Finnish Dinner Date, is the most civilised thing to happen to loneliness since the pub quiz. It is flying 16 singles to Helsinki and Tampere in February 2027 for the Finnish Dinner Date. The minimum age limit to apply is 18. There is no upper age limit.

It is a free trip to Finland, loosely disguised as a love story. Eight winners will be sent to Helsinki and eight to Tampere between 9 and 19 February 2027, for four days apiece. Flights, accommodation in a private room, meals and hosted activities are all covered. Those activities include saunas, sightseeing and the sort of outdoor pursuits that sound charming until you remember it is February in Finland.

The centrepiece is a group dinner, at which each party of eight travellers is joined by two Finnish singles. In Helsinki, the menu comes from Adele Kinnunen of Café Savoy, a name you may know from Finland's MasterChef Professionals. In Tampere, it is the work of Henry Tikkanen, the restaurateur behind Gösta, who has flown the flag at the Bocuse d'Or. Nobody is promising you love, but you will be eating well while you wait for it.

The campaign borrows from a real Finnish habit called sinkkukori, or "single basket". In certain supermarkets, shoppers carry a pink basket to signal that they are single and open to conversation. It is dating by logistics: no app, no algorithm, just a bit of plastic and the quiet confidence that someone will comment on your choice of oat milk. It went viral, as these things do, and Visit Finland has now taken it from the dairy aisle to the dinner table.

Is It Actually a Blind Date?

Northern Lights in Finland

Only in the loosest sense. There is no matchmaking, no compatibility questionnaire and no one-on-one pairing. Instead, the dinners are a group affair, and Visit Finland has made no promises about romantic outcomes. If chemistry strikes, wonderful. If it doesn't, you have still had a free holiday and an excellent meal, which is more than most second dates can claim.

One more thing to know: you don't get to pick your city. Helsinki or Tampere will be assigned once you have confirmed your place, so a firm preference for the seaside capital over the Lakeland city will have to be set aside. Both, to be fair, are rather lovely.

Of course, this is not Finland's first act of generosity. The country, named the world's happiest for nine years running, has spent the last few years handing out free stays in the name of well-being, from happiness masterclasses at a Lakeland resort to culinary breaks in Lapland. The logic is sound. Finland has won the happiness argument, but its food has yet to win the reputation argument. Feeding sixteen strangers a chef's tasting menu, and letting them post about it, is a rather elegant way to make a case.

So, what would you serve on a dinner date, and why? You have, at the time of writing, a few days to decide.

How to Apply For The Free Trip to Finland

Applications are open to singles aged 18 and over from anywhere in the world, with the exception of Finnish citizens and residents. There are two steps.

  1. Make a video, in English, answering one question: "What would you serve on a dinner date, and why?"

  2. Post it publicly on Instagram, TikTok or YouTube with the hashtag #FinnishDinnerDate, tagging Visit Finland (@ourfinland on Instagram, @visitfinland.com on TikTok, @VisitFinland on YouTube). Then complete the official online application and include the link.

The video should be original footage and audio of you, and the judges say they are looking at creativity, authenticity and how personally you answer. This is not the moment for a stock-footage montage of truffles. Answer it as you would at an actual dinner: with specifics, a little self-deprecation, and a dish that reveals something true about you. "Pasta" is a start, but why pasta is the date.

Anyone who would rather not announce their romantic ambitions to their entire contact list has an escape hatch. Instagram and TikTok entries must be public, but a YouTube upload can be set to unlisted, so only those with the link can see it.

Applications close at 11:59 a.m. Finnish time on 10 November 2026, which is around 3.45 a.m IST of 11 November. Winners will be contacted individually, and the full list will be announced on 1 December on Visit Finland's Instagram and TikTok. Do reply promptly: the rules allow your place to be offered to someone else if you stay silent for 48 hours after the announcement.

How To Apply For A Finnish Visa?

While Visit Finland covers major expenses like round-trip flights, accommodation, meals, and activities, tourism boards typically do not manage or bypass the legal visa entry requirements for your specific passport. You will need to apply for your own visa if your nationality requires one to enter the Schengen Area.

If you are selected as one of the 16 lucky winners, keep these details in mind: You need an official invitation. Visit Finland will provide documentation confirming your funded trip, which you can use as supporting evidence for your tourist visa application. Your passport must be valid for at least 90 days after your intended date of departure from the Schengen area.

Application Timeline: Visa processing times vary depending on your country (e.g., standard tourist visas can take about 15 days or more). Because the trip takes place from February 9–19, 2027, you will need to act immediately once winners are announced.
