The biggest change to the New Zealand's visitor's visa is pretty straightforward: paper applications are going digital.
From 1 October 2026, applications for the New Zealand Visitor Visa must be submitted through Immigration New Zealand’s enhanced Immigration Online system. Travellers applying online can create an account, complete the application, upload their documents and pay the applicable fee digitally.
For Indian travellers, this means the application process can be handled online rather than through a paper application. Additionally, the duration for the visa as a single or multi-entry has also been updated with significant changes.
If you're planning a New Zealand holiday around the end of 2026 or over the Christmas and New Year period, it is worth getting your documentation together early. Immigration New Zealand specifically warns that it receives a high volume of Visitor Visa applications during the summer period.
The length of your stay in New Zealand depends on the type of visa you receive from the Immigration New Zealand. But generally, the New Zealand tourist visa allows an application to include your partner and dependent children till age 19 or younger in your Visitor Visa application, provided you submit the required evidence of your relationship and identity. Alternatively, family members can apply for their own visas.

A multiple-entry Visitor Visa allows you to visit New Zealand multiple times while the visa is valid, with stays of up to six months in each 12-month period.
A single-entry Visitor Visa, on the other hand, allows you to enter New Zealand once and can permit a stay of up to nine months in an 18-month period including 3 months study option.
Overall, visitors can stay for a maximum of nine months in an 18-month period, depending on the visa granted. For most Indian travellers planning a holiday, however, the relevant stay will be considerably shorter than these maximum limits.
The Visitor Visa costs from NZD $441 (roughly ₹42,000). Immigration New Zealand currently lists the processing time as 80 per cent within two weeks, although travellers should avoid treating this as a guaranteed turnaround.
The immigration authority also recommends that travellers do not book non-refundable travel until their Visitor Visa has been approved.
Indian travellers should be prepared to provide:
- A copy of their passport
- An acceptable photograph
- Evidence of sufficient funds
- Proof of their travel plans and genuine intention to visit New Zealand
- Proof that they can leave New Zealand at the end of their stay
- Medical or police certificates, if Immigration New Zealand requires them
- English translations of documents that are not in English
Your passport must also be valid for at least three months after the date you plan to leave New Zealand.
For travellers paying for their own trip, Immigration New Zealand says applicants should have at least NZD $1,000 per month for living expenses, or NZD $400 per month if accommodation has already been paid for.
You will also need to demonstrate that you can leave New Zealand at the end of your visit. This can include an onward or return ticket, or evidence that you have enough money to purchase one.
Not necessarily. For stays of less than six months, a chest X-ray is not normally required. A medical certificate is also not normally required for stays of less than 12 months.
However, Immigration New Zealand can request a chest X-ray or medical examination depending on your circumstances.
If evidence is requested, a chest X-ray or medical examination certificate must generally be less than three months old when Immigration New Zealand receives it.
