Picture a winter morning where you wake up to birdsong, a cup of estate-grown coffee, and a view that goes all the way to the horizon. Now, picture an alternative which is much hard hitting reality of major of mega metro cities: a room window that frames nothing but grey haze, water crisis and extreme heat.
Winter is India's best travel season, but it is also when much of the north disappears into smog. The worst stretch usually runs from mid-October to mid-November, when crop fires, falling temperatures and festival fireworks arrive together, and cold still air settles like a lid and traps smoke close to the ground. Hazy skies mean lost views, scratchy throats and wasted holiday days, which is why more of us now check the AQI before booking a flight.
This year there is a second thing to plan around. Strong to very strong El Niño conditions currently prevail over the equatorial Pacific and are expected to persist through January–March 2027. A recent report warns of warmer-than-normal winter temperatures, an earlier onset of summer-like conditions and below-normal rainfall for most of the country.
For travellers, that means a shorter sweet spot: December and January are your window for cool mornings, clear skies and comfortable sightseeing. So where should you go? These six destinations, from tea hills and coffee estates to island beaches and Himalayan viewpoints, are your best bets for clean air, clear views and a proper winter break
