On Beach Road, teal chairs and picnic tables put you close enough to the surf to taste the salt. Le Café's building dates back to the 1790s when it served as a French harbor and customs house. Initially called the Old Port Office, it was later transformed into a tourist café managed by the Puducherry Tourism Department.
Atop The Promenade Hotel in White Town, glass railings frame the Bay of Bengal and the lighthouse across the road, best viewed as the sky turns from blue to something closer to rosé. The kitchen is Pan-Asian, with specialties likwe golden fried prawns to honey sesame lamb, with sticky mango rice closing the meal on a genuinely memorable note. The multi-cuisine menu covers Continental to Chinese, but the fresh prawns and the day's catch are why regulars keep climbing the stairs.
