Between July 27 and August 2, South Indian OTT platforms roll out five varied titles across JioHotstar, Netflix, Aha and ZEE5. Viewers get a gentle Malayalam-Tamil romance in Varanasi, a third season of a Tamil hospital drama, a Telugu coming-of-age love story, a hit Tamil sports comedy sequel, and a dark Malayalam psychological thriller from acclaimed collaborators.
If you're the kind of person who plans the weekend around what's new to watch, this is a good week to be in South India. Between July 27 and August 2, five titles are making their way from the big screen to the small one, a quiet Malayalam love story shot in the ghats of Varanasi, a Tamil hospital drama returning for a third round, a Telugu romance built around two young unknowns, a Tamil sports comedy sequel with a twist, and a Malayalam thriller from the team behind one of last year's biggest hits. They land across four platforms, JioHotstar, Netflix, Aha and ZEE5, and between them cover just about every mood a viewer could want. From Chinna Chinna Aasai, Gatta Kusthi 2, Balan: The Boy to Deewana, here's a look at each one, and where to watch it.
Most romance dramas rely on big, dramatic turns, a confession in the rain, a wedding interrupted. Chinna Chinna Aasai, premiering on JioHotstar on July 28, takes the opposite approach.
The film follows Leela, a reserved woman from Thanjavur on a spiritual trip to Varanasi. When she gets separated from her tour group and loses both her phone and her purse, she's suddenly stranded in a city she doesn't know, unable to speak the language. The person who steps in to help is Madhavan Master, a good-natured schoolteacher from Kerala. What follows isn't a whirlwind romance so much as a day of small kindnesses, walking the ghats together, sharing a meal, slowly finding common ground despite not sharing a mother tongue.
Madhoo and veteran actor Indrans carry the film as Leela and Madhavan, with Aparna Balamurali, Vishnu Agasthya, Thambi Ramaiah and Kaali Venkat rounding out the cast.
Tamil viewers have been asking for this one since Season 2 wrapped. Heart Beat, the medical drama set inside the fictional RK Multispeciality Hospital, returns for its third season on JioHotstar on July 30.
What's made the show stand out since it began in 2024 isn't dramatic surgery scenes or miracle recoveries, it's the smaller, messier reality of being a young doctor: the exhaustion, the self-doubt, the relationships that fall apart because there's no time for them. Season 3 continues in that vein, bringing back Anumol as Dr Radhi alongside Karthik Kumar and Charukesh M, with a new batch of interns joining the hospital's already tangled web of friendships and rivalries.
Deewana had a solid run in theatres back in June, and now it's heading to Aha, a day early for Aha Gold subscribers on July 30, and for everyone else on July 31.
The film marks two debuts worth noting: it's the first screen role for actress Smeha Manimegalai, and the first time director Sreekanth Sangishetty has helmed a feature. Together with lead actor Harshith Reddy, they've built a coming-of-age love story about two people learning to fight for a relationship rather than simply falling into one, familiar territory for the genre, but handled with more sincerity than spectacle.
The original Gatta Kusthi was a sleeper hit back in 2022, and its sequel has done even better, crossing roughly ₹50 crore worldwide within days of its July 3 theatrical release. Now it's Netflix's turn.
What makes the sequel interesting isn't just the wrestling-ring comedy fans expect, but a genuine swap in who's chasing the dream. In the first film, it was Veera pursuing a career while his partner Keerthi held things together at home. This time, Keerthi is the one training to become a professional wrestler, while Veera stays home to run the household and support her, until their daughter's struggles at school threaten to upend the arrangement. Vishnu Vishal and Aishwarya Lekshmi reprise their roles, joined by Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Karunas and Munishkanth. Netflix hasn't put out an official press release yet, but multiple reports point to a July 31 streaming date across Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi.
The last title on this week's list carries some of the highest expectations. Balan: The Boy reunites director Chidambaram and writer Jithu Madhavan, the pair behind last year's blockbuster Manjummel Boys, for a much darker, more introspective project, and it premieres on ZEE5 on July 31.
The story follows a teenage boy searching for his missing mother, a search that slowly uncovers secrets the family had buried for years. It's a tonal departure for both filmmakers, trading the crowd-pleasing energy of Manjummel Boys for something quieter and more unsettling. Farzana Palathingal and newcomer Adhisheshan KR lead the cast, with Tovino Thomas appearing in a supporting role. Ahead of its theatrical release, the film was even picked up for international sales at the Cannes Film Festival's market section, a notable vote of confidence for a Malayalam psychological thriller.
